Episode 62: George Hutton - Northern Ireland Troubles, The Catholic Church & Singing To Success

In this week's episode, we are honoured to sit down with the incredibly talented and humble George Hutton, a professional singer and tenor from Derry. In our conversation, George takes us back to his childhood in Derry during the final years of the Troubles in Northern Ireland. He shares the profound challenges he and his family faced during this tumultuous period, including the harrowing experiences his father endured at the hands of British soldiers. George reflects on the heavy burden of living in a divided community, where even simple associations could be dangerous, describing it as a form of intergenerational trauma. He opens up about the complexities of growing up in such a volatile environment and the lasting impact it had on him. As George moves into the later chapters of his life, he recounts how his passion for singing began at the age of 16, when a local tenor urged him to pursue it seriously. This advice led George to begin formal classical training at 19, which eventually propelled him to a career in the world of classical singing. He shares the story of his time as one of The Five Irish Tenors, a group that toured across forty-seven states in the U.S. as part of three national tours, thanks to the efforts of Columbia Artists. In recent years, George has teamed up with renowned musician Phil Coulter, and together they have embarked on a musical journey, touring throughout Ireland for the past five years. In this conversation, we also delve into George's thoughts on the Catholic Church and the dark history of abuses committed in Ireland, discussing how the nation allowed such atrocities to happen within its own borders. This episode is a rich and heartfelt discussion on joy, resilience, and the strength needed to move forward in life despite hardship—especially in these uncertain times. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. To listen, click the link in our bio or below:
