HH #436: Heather Macfayden on community, healing and listening to the Holy Spirit

HH #436: Heather Macfayden on community, healing and listening to the Holy Spirit

“Confession is not a ‘guilt’ confession. It’s an ‘aligning with God’ confession. I want to get in line with what is true so I am confessing that this has been untrue, and now I want to believe truly from this core place.”

Heather MacFadyen wrote online before Facebook existed. After years of blog entries, in 2013 she launched a trailblazing podcast called God Centered Mom. In 2018, the show rebranded to the Don’t Mom Alone podcast, and she has a book out NOW of the same name! What I love about Heather is that her content isn’t just for moms. Yes, moms can get so much out of this, but this episode is really about community, listening to the Holy Spirit, and healing - something that can be applied to so many situations and areas of our lives. It’s about confronting and confessing the lies we tell ourselves so that we can align with the truth of who God says we are. This is not the episode to skip, and check out her new book Don’t Mom Alone!

HH #435: Parenting and launching kids into their identity with Dave & Ann Wilson

HH #435: Parenting and launching kids into their identity with Dave & Ann Wilson

“The goal is not to have a perfect teenager...our goal was that they’d love Jesus and love their neighbor.”

This was the interview I needed. Dave and Ann Wilson, founders of a multi-campus church and family coaches, talk all about parenting and launching kids into their identity. Their newest book No Perfect Parents shares easy-to-apply principles that can help foster strong parent-child relationships through adulthood. I always say that being a parent will go down as my hardest job ever, and it’s easy to get caught up in judging my “success” as a parent based on how well my kids turn out. But this episode was a reminder that the best thing we can do for our kids is to not only love them but also constantly remind them of who they are in Christ and what God has the power to do in their lives.

HH 434: Jamin Goggin on how to face disappointment and confusion after a role model turns out to be not so great

HH 434: Jamin Goggin on how to face disappointment and confusion after a role model turns out to be not so great

“These deep cries of our heart, these places of pain, anguish, hurt, anger. The place to bring that, first and foremost, is to God in prayer.”

Jamin Goggin serves as a pastor at Mission Hills Church in San Marcos, California. Back in 2017, Jamin released the book "The Way of the Dragon or the Way of the Lamb" with his co-author Kyle Strobel. When they first released the book, it was after a journey of realizing that maybe their whole approach to ministry was actually at odds with the heart of God because it was driven by a sense of power. After the release, news broke that one of the people they highlighted as a model for the way of Jesus had a dark secret and downfall. This caused Jamin to not only reassess the book but also face a lot of disappointment and confusion. He has a lot of great insight on how to come before God in our hurt and anger, while also never forgetting to lament over the direct victims of these situations.

HH #433: The truth about the lies we believe with John Mark Comer

HH #433: The truth about the lies we believe with John Mark Comer

“Jesus came as a teacher to give us new mental maps to reality so that we can follow Him, live under His teaching, and show up to reality in such a way that we flourish and we thrive and we have eternal life.”

What a beautiful reminder from today’s guest, John Mark Comer. John Mark Comer is the founding pastor of Bridgetown Church in Portland, Oregon, and the bestselling author of The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry and recently released Live No Lies: Recognize and Resist the Three Enemies that Sabotage Your Peace. John Mark is passionate about truth versus lies and understanding how it affects the people of God. When we allow lies to seep into our mental map, we start believing and living as if those are true. This is an incredibly insightful conversation that you don’t want to miss.

HH #432: On The Other Side of a Heart in Motion with Amy Grant

Today's episode is a special sneak-peek into the podcast that I co-host with Aaron, On The Other Side! We were so blown away by this conversation that I decided to share it with my happy hour listeners!

30 years ago, Amy Grant released her iconic album Heart In Motion, which launched her career into new heights. Her music is a huge reason for the rise of the contemporary Christian genre and became the first artist in Christian music to have a platinum record. This is Amy’s story of being on the other side of Heart In Motion.

HH #431: Learn the importance of being yourself and that God Made You with purpose

HH #431: Learn the importance of being yourself and that God Made You with purpose

My very first kids’ book is officially out in the world! God Made You To Be You released yesterday and I am so proud of this work. People have asked what inspired me to write a children’s book and it was actually the book I released last October, You Be You! Chapter 8 of You Be You is all about blooming where you’re planted, and that chapter sparked an idea for sharing this message with children. I want the kids in your life to know that God made them with a purpose to fulfill, and it’s important to their friends, family, and community.

Whether you’re a parent, grandparent, teacher, aunt, uncle (honorary counts), I’m so excited for y’all to read this to your little ones!

6 year fan

I discovered Jamie Ivey during my first year of classes for my doctorate. I was driving 3 hours to class and I needed something to listen to. This was about the team when Podcasts were emerging. I fell in love with Jamie Ivey and her commitment to Jesus and following His a truth. I especially loved the episodes when she included her husband. Plus, she’s good at interviewing people. Thanks, Jamie!

I feel seen here

Jamie!! What you have set out to do, you are doing. I am a Christian, I am in my 30’s, I am a woman of color and I am married to a white man. I feel welcome here. Every episode I can learn from, relate to, and grow from. You have done a great job at presenting diverse experiences from women. And your intentionality on including women of color on your show is evident too. It comes across as intentional yet not mechanical. Thank you for being humble. You express how important racial reconciliation is to you, while also ambition that you don’t know it all and you are learning. Thank you for using your platform, your influence and your privilege to spread love. This brown girl appreciates you.

Use to love, now it’s woke theology

Christians, listen with discernment. I’ve found her podcast to have dramatically changed over the past five years. When she became heavily influenced by the enneagram— bringing enneagram leaders on the that do not hold historic christian beliefs I became very concerned. More and more this year she seems to be siding with the world on many topics and so sadly I’m unfollowing. For anyone feeling the same way, check out Alisa Childers podcast, For the Gospel Podcast, and Relatable Podcast for some sound doctrine and interviews that side with the Bible.
