The History of England

This my re-telling of the story of England. I aim to be honest, and rigorous - but always loving of my country's history. It is a regular, chronological podcast, starting from the end of Roman Britain. There are as many of the great events I can squeeze in, of course, but I also try to keep an eye on how people lived, their language, what was important to them, the forces that shaped their lives and destinies, that sort of thing. This is a grand chronological survey history podcast on the model and scale of Mike Duncan's classic History of Rome podcastt In his British bloke-in-a-shed way, David's style and humor are also similar to Mike's in that he uses lively conversational language and the occasional sarcastic comment to help us imagine these antique figures as relatable contemporary humans. It's even interesting to hear birds chirping or the occasional truck engine or train whistle in the background (only in some of the earlier episodes, regrettably). David not only provides a comprehensive chronigical account of political history, he takes many, many (many) side journeys into biography, social history, culture and special topics. Some of these are one episode, some are mini-series of their own. I await the next episode of the central narrative impatiently, but I still have many of David’s side-projects yet to be listened to. The sheer volume of high quality material David generates is mind-boggling and deeply appreciated. Thank you, David!

Enjoyable narrative and good sense of humor. The series move fairly quickly up through good Queen Bess and James the first. After that it will hold you hostage for two entire seasons belaboring the era of Cromwell. At some point the time spent discussing the revolution will exceed the actual time it took for events to unfold.
