139- Moxee: The Hops Capitol of the World

In Yakima County, the City of Moxee is situated between the Rattle Snake and Yakima mountains to the east of the Yakima River. A Catholic mission to the Yakamas was temporarily located in the Moxee area, which has long been a part of the Yakama Tribe's homeland. The 1860s saw the start of permanent non-Native settlement, and Moxee was established in 1867. Moxee's growth was aided by the Northern Pacific Railway's arrival in the Yakima Valley and the building of irrigation ditches, such as the Selah-Moxee Canal, which used water from the Yakima River to cultivate acres of land. Before 1930, Moxee—which incorporated in 1921—became the world's hops capital.

138- Queen Marie of Romania & the Evergreen State

Rumored by the global press for years before actually taking place, Queen Marie of Romania's visit to the country finally took place during the fall of 1926. Notably for Evergreen State residents at the time, she would tour the still wild state of Washington and make appearances in places such as Spokane, Maryhill, the young and growing town of Longview on the banks of the Columbia River, and across Seattle, incluing a notable stop at Roosevelt High School. Her visit would include the dedication of Maryhill Museum, which actually wouldn't open until fourteen years after her tour, and the dedication of the Peace Arch Monument, both of which were heavily funded by the eccentric James Hill.

Great podcast about a great state

I’m a born and raise Washingtonian. Jon provides stories I’ve never heard and ones that we’ve forgotten about. His prospective is appreciated.

Love that he adds native history too. The most recent Makah episode was excellent!
