Our Workflow for High ISO Images

Newer digital cameras do an excellent job with handling noise at higher ISOs, but they are not noise-free. When you shoot action like sports or wildlife, especially if you’re not using fast (read: expensive) lenses, you can easily find yourself shooting well over ISO 6400. The good news is that modern AI-based software tools for noise reduction can handle these shots and deliver results that look like you were shooting at low ISOs!

This week, we’ll share our fundamental workflow for high-ISO photos, and we’ll be doing a demonstration for our show sponsors in an upcoming bonus video.

ISO 12,800 isn’t a problem for modern noise-reduction software (right).

    Photographing the Solar Eclipse

Unless you’ve been under a rock, you probably saw LOTS of photos of the North American solar eclipse. We have some thoughts on it, plus Rick got to try out the Nikon Zf mirrorless camera, and offers his thoughts on the retro-styled Nikon.

    Get creative with alternative crops

This week, we chat about using alternative aspect ratios as a creative tool. You might be able to choose crop ratios in your camera, or you can crop your images later in post. Different camera models handle in-camera cropping differently, so you’ll want to check to see if raw files are cropped, or if the original file dimensions are preserved.

We also talk briefly about trends in Arca-Swiss compatible plates and brackets from Chinese brands that can save you a lot of money, but are they well-made?

Hands-on with the OM-1 Mark II

This week, we both got the opportunity to get our hands on the brand new OM System OM-1 Mark II. While there are lots of early reviews out there from insiders, we had some specific features we really wanted to test, including:

    * Human Face/Eye detection (improved algorithm)

    * Subject detection autofocus with tracking and smaller AF-target areas

    * Continuous AF with tracking enabled when subject detection is off (C-AF+TR)

    * Slower frame rates in SH2 sequential shooting settings (12.5 and 16.7fps)

We then offer our take as to whether or not the OM System OM-1 MarkII should be in your bag.

    Photographing Cuba

We are back from a 10-day trip to Cuba, a rich photographic location. This week, we’ll discuss what it’s like going to Cuba, how to get there, and how Americans can travel there legally. We’ll be sharing some of our photos in this week’s bonus video for our Show Sponsors.

In Cuba, we each brought a different camera system but we had similar setups overall. We’ll discuss our favorite subjects, including the vintage cars, architecture, and colorful people.

One of the best podcasts on photography

Great up to date and pertinent information on equipment, topics du jour, latest techniques and places to photograph. Not sure what jaymc5 is alluding to, but the Image Doctors began in the Nikonians group years ago, so the initial equipment reviews were Nikon. Not anymore, if jaymc5 were paying attention. Kudos to a long-running successful podcast.

Calming, philosophical, and inspirational

This is the antidote for YouTube overload. So glad I found this podcast. Don’t be misled by the intro music. There are some some hidden gems of wisdom scattered throughout these discussions that I will be applying to more than just photography.
