Holly Morrell returns to the Importance of Being Show to promote an upcoming cardiac screening at Laguna Beach High School. Through her nonprofit Heartfelt Cardiac Connections, Holly has worked over 20 years to help save over 1000 lives by identifying heart conditions that could lead to Sudden Cardiac Arrest by providing low cost screenings to over 50, 000 people throughout the Orange County area.

And Dana Hills varsity tennis star Ali Aga discusses discovering her own genetic heart defect at a Heartfelt cardiac screening at her high school and joining forces with Holly at Heartfelt to increase awareness of this disease and save young lives.

Laguna Beach’s Emergency Operations Coordinator Brendan Manning drops in to talk about being in the “eye of the storm” during the last month’s Emerald wildfire. Also he shares a bit from his origin story in the Peace Corps and more recently working out of the US Embassy in Ethiopia for the US Forest Service. (Well, Brendan assures us that he was/is NOT a secret agent.) However, all kidding aside, Brendan explains how planning and preparedness “saved the day” and prevented any property damage or loss of life during the Emerald Fire. And we close out the show with some suggestions for personal disaster preparedness including having a go bag at the ready and creating defensible space space around your home to prevent fire damage.

David Horne director of the Greater Laguna Coast Fire Safe Council discusses losing his home in the 1993 Laguna Beach wildfire and his subsequent efforts to improve wildfire safety and preparedness in the community including working on insurability issues, red flag patrol and banner displays, vegetation moisture sampling and the current non-renewal cluster identification survey.
