Alto Flutes and Red Socks with Jean-Paul Wright

Alto Flutes and Red Socks with Jean-Paul Wright

The flute podcasting world is a rapidly growing one, but there’s one podcast that’s stood the test of time; the reliable stalwart of consistent excellence that is Talking Flutes. I’ve been a fan since the early days, and without it, Inline G wouldn’t exist. So it brings me great pleasure to FINALLY twist the arm of host Jean-Paul Wright into coming on here and giving us the crossover younger Gareth dreamed of.
Not only a podcaster, Jean-Paul is also the Managing Director of Trevor James Flutes, having previously worked with Sankyo and Miyazawa, as well as being a trailblazer in the field of musician’s mental health.
This is a lovely, positive episode talking about validity as musicians, what art means to us and how to look after ourselves. It also has some of the best anecdotes Inline G has ever seen; including the origin story of the red socks, told publicly for the first time ever.

Gold Flutes and Spezi with Marianna Busslechner

Gold Flutes and Spezi with Marianna Busslechner

This week’s Inline G couldn’t have had a more serendipitous timing, as I sat down with the brand new (as in, 2 days brand new!) permanent Principal Flute of the WDR Funkhausorchester; Marianna Busslechner.
Formerly at the Staatskapelle Dresden orchestral academy, Marianna chats about her experiences going directly from playing under Christian Thielemann to improvising jazz solos at the WDR.
We also chatted about her now professional connections with Die Maus and Tatort, and I finally get to ask a guest their favourite Arctic Monkeys song.
You can find Marianna on social media @MariannaBusslechner

Articulation and Kindness with Alice Brie

Articulation and Kindness with Alice Brie

Inline G return’s to it’s roots this week; hungover with a world-class flutist, sipping on a Spezi and chatting about all the big issues of the flute world.
One of my personal best mates, French superstar orchestral musician and soloist Alice Brie was in town, and after a long night of Guinness until 4am, we emerged at 11am for a podcast.
Alice chats about everything from her experiences as a child prodigy, studying at the CNSM as a teenager, her orchestral debut at l’Opéra de Paris at just 18, right through to French v German tonguing and the role kindness plays to becoming better musicians.
This was a delight of an episode. I’m away for a nap and a kebab now x

Sankyo and Apfelschorle with Julien Beaudiment

Sankyo and Apfelschorle with Julien Beaudiment

After I waxed lyrical on Episode 28 of this podcast about Julien Beaudiment’s latest album, “California Dreamin’”, it was an inevitability that I would coax him on here. He found himself in Sunny Köln whilst on tour with The London Symphony Orchestra recently, and thus here we are.
Julien and I chatted about his time in orchestras in The UK, France and The US, as well as his nervousness before concerts, a shared love of apfelschorle and inevitably; The French Flute School.
There’s also an incredibly special sneak peak of Julien’s upcoming solo album at the very end of the episode. I can’t stress how lucky you guys are to hear this first; a true Inline G exclusive.
    Merci mes potes x

New York Philharmonic Assault Scandal with Sammy Sussman

New York Philharmonic Assault Scandal with Sammy Sussman

On the 12th April of this year, Vulture magazine published an article entitled “A Hidden Sexual Assault Scandal at the New York Philharmonic.”
It details an alleged sexual misconduct case from 2010, and the various related ongoings since then.
I am delighted to welcome the author of this landmark piece, Sammy Sussman, on to Inline G to talk about it, the various reactions and the potential implications for the classical music world.
Please also be aware that this episode contains descriptions of abuse, which some may find triggering.
This was a landmark episode, and I am thrilled that guests of this calibre feel comfortable to tell their story on Inline G.

Classical Fluting in Ireland with Catriona Ryan

Coming to you fresh from the Emerald Isle herself, this week’s episode features the the Principal Flute of The National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland (and proud fellow owner of an Irish accent); Catriona Ryan.
After a few Instagram DMs, Catriona managed to squeeze me into her exceptionally busy schedule after a rehearsal to sit down together in the National Concerto Hall in Dublin and chat all things flute.
From platinum Brannens and the importance of Orchestral Blending to a shared admiration of irish trad players and String, this episode has a wee something for everyone.

Fleautiful ,

The flute nerd podcast we never knew we needed

I never ever write reviews, but I sent this message to a friend and she told me that 1. I convinced her and 2. I should post it so here it is:

A-maze-ing. Period. Worth it. This episode just came out and it’s the Facebook forum with a bonus at the end. Don’t procrastinate - we need to take this guy out for drinks!

Thank you, Gareth, for this service you are providing the rational flutists of the world :)
