The Talmudic story Tracie referenced can be found in Talmud Chagiga 15b, where there is discussion around how to think about teachings of Acher, the rabbi turned apostate. Here it says “Rabbi Meir [Acher’s friend and former student] found a pomegranate; he ate the inside and threw away the peel!” You can read the whole passage here.
