Patrick McKeown | The Oxygen Advantage: Simple, Scientifically Proven Breathing Techniques to Help You Become Healthier, Slimmer, Faster, and Fitter KKP: 362

Today, I am blessed to have here with me Patrick McKeown. World-renowned author and breathing practitioner Patrick McKeown was educated at Trinity College in Dublin, before completing his clinical training in the Buteyko Breathing Method at the Buteyko Clinic, Moscow, Russia. This training was accredited by Professor Konstantin Buteyko.
From a young age, Patrick suffered from asthma and relied on an array of medicines and inhalers until he discovered the Buteyko Method at the age of 26, experiencing immediate relief from his symptoms. By applying the principals of the Buteyko Method, Patrick remains asthma-free since then, a feat that over 20 years of medication had failed to accomplish.
In a career spanning 15 years, Patrick has since also become a bestselling author and expert on the topic of optimal breathing for improved health, wellbeing, and fitness.
In this episode, Patrick talks about how crowded teeth can be a problem for breathing. Then, we discuss the main issues that can develop with chronic mouth breathers. Patrick dives into exactly how we should be breathing through our noses and the relaxation effect that will take place with proper inhales and exhales. Tune in as Patrick reveals why he highly recommends taping your mouth before bed. Plus, Patrick recommends the best resources to learn more about breathing exercises and guidelines.

[00:30] How Patrick Started Practicing Slow Breathing and Light Breathing
After reading articles in the newspaper, Patrick learned how to clear his nasal passages and breathe through his nose. He started to practice slow breathing and light breathing. Through breathing, he was able to influence the temperature of his fingers. Learn more about Patrick by reading his book Atomic Focus: https://www.amazon.com/Atomic-Focus-Resilience-Breathing-Exercises-ebook/dp/B09D9ZL9HL/benazadi-20
[07:15] The Problem With Crowded Teeth and Breathing
If the teeth are crowded, your jaw is too small. If your jaw is too small, there’s not enough room for the tongue. So, the tongue is more likely to encroach the airway. When your airway is compromised, you may get disordered breathing during sleep. A palate expander is something that can be useful to improve breathing.
[16:40] The Problems That Can Develop With Chronic Mouth Breathing
Yawning excessively can be a clue to mouth breathing. Whenever Patrick works with a student, he tries to switch them from mouth breathing to nose breathing as much as possible. He also works on functional breathing patterns. Light breathing helps ensure the blood chemistry is normal. You’re more likely to breathe light through your nose. By changing our breathing patterns, we can stimulate the vagus nerve.
[21:55] Patrick Explains How You Should Breathe Through Your Nose
Bring your attention to your breathing. Slow down your inhale, and have a slow, gentle exhalation. When you need to breathe in, take in a gentle inhalation. At the end of the inhalation, bring a feeling of relaxation to the body. When you do this correctly, you will feel air hunger. As you do this for two to three minutes, check the saliva in your mouth. Normally, it increases. When the human body undergoes stress, the mouth goes dry. While on the othe

Megan Ramos | How to Beat Insulin Resistance & Diabetes For Good, & Advanced Fasting Strategies KKP: 361

Megan Ramos comes back to the Keto Kamp Podcast to discuss all things insulin resistance & diabetes.
    Keto Challenge Recordings: https://kka.mykajabi.com/offers/UxThDWSJ/checkout
    About Megan Ramos
Megan Ramos is the CEO and co-founder of the Intensive Dietary Management (IDM) Program, clinical educator, and researcher, Megan Ramos. Megan’s major role in the IDM Program is to facilitate the patient’s education on the IDM dietary principles and counsel them on their fasting regimens.
Megan, along with her colleague Dr. Jason Fung, believe that both what you eat and when you eat matter. The IDM Program utilizes therapeutic fasting and time restricted eating protocols with their patients to help them reverse their type 2 diabetes and achieve sustainable weight-loss. They encourage their patients to eat real foods and adopt a low-carb lifestyle in addition to the fasting.
You Can Be Metabolically Unhealthy But Look Skinny
There are two different types of fat: subcutaneous fat and visceral fat. Subcutaneous fat is the fat that we are self-conscious of at the beach. It sits between our abdominal wall and our abdominal cavity. This type of fat doesn't exactly go into our organs or infiltrate our organs; it's unsightly, and if we accumulate more of it, it puts us at risk for disease. The secondary type of fat, visceral fat, is a real sneaky bugger. It sits under the abdominal cavity. Plus, this type of fat wraps around your organs and infiltrates into your organs. You can have a lot of visceral fat and still be skinny. The scale doesn't tell us what our body is made up of.
    Is Insulin Bad For You?
Too much of anything good for you is bad for you. Not having enough insulin, that's a problem, or having too much insulin too, is also a problem. Sadly, mainstream medicine doesn't understand the definition of too much insulin. Megan says that there is a time and a place for insulin injections for certain people. However, most people are eating a diet that's highly processed and full of refined sugars and fats. Plus, we're eating all of the time; so, we're making our body produce lots of insulin over time. For North Americans, our constant state is to produce insulin all the time. Our cells will develop resistance. Remember, absence makes the heart grow stronger.
Why Megan Loves a Low Carb Approach
You don't want to keep adding fuel to the fire; dietary choices are essential. When you're eating low carbs, you're not adding more fuel to the fire, and you're giving your body a chance to burn off some of that fire. When someone already has insulin resistance, insulin resistance causes the body to produce insulin. If you are constantly eating all day long, then insulin is being leaked into the body all day long. Intermittent fasting will help break the cycle of insulin resistance because you will be suffocating the fire. Overall, the body is impressive, and you have to remove the interferences.
The Reason You Want Variation For Fasting
You don't want to slip into this one meal-a-day pattern consistently because the body will adapt. You want to keep confusing the body and changing it up; that way, the body won't adapt. It's great to mix things up! Our primary hunger hormone is ghrelin, and when men and women both start fasting, we see a drop in ghrelin. Then men's ghrelin tends just to go up and down, and it stays relatively consistent. However, women will see an initial drop; it will continue to decline more than their male counterparts. Many women feel like they're constantly putting out this enormous fire when doing alternate daily fasting. They would instead rather get into a fast and stay there. If you want to stay in a fast, you can! However, you need to cut out the snacks and reduce problematic foods.

Dr Paul Saladino | The Number One Food to Remove From Your Diet Immediately, The Problem With Longterm Keto, & More! KKP: 360

Today, I am blessed to have here with me Dr. Saladino. He is the leading authority on the science and application of the carnivore diet. He has used this diet to reverse autoimmunity, chronic inflammation and mental health issues in hundreds of patients, many of whom had been told their conditions were untreatable.
In addition to his personal podcast, Fundamental Health, he can be found featured on numerous podcasts including The Minimalists, The Model Health Show, Bulletproof Radio, The Dr. Gundry Podcast, The Ben Greenfield Podcast, Dr. Mercola, Health Theory, Mark Bell’s Power Project, and many others. He has also appeared on The Doctors TV show and will release his first book in 2020 titled, “The Carnivore Code: Unlocking the Secrets to Optimal Health by Returning to our Ancestral Diet.”
In this episode, Dr. Paul Saladino first speaks about his appearance on the Doctors and how it was a complete hit job. Then, Dr. Saladino reveals the reason he started incorporating more carbohydrates into his diet. We talk about why insulin resistance isn’t the best term to describe what is going on with people’s health. Later, we dive into the importance of lowering your linolic acid intake. Tune in as we chat about omega-3s, why Dr. Paul doesn’t eat any vegetables, and if there is a connection between eating meat and colon cancer.

[00:50] Dr. Paul Saladino Talks About His Appearance on The Doctors
Before Dr. Paul’s appearance on The Doctors, he was told it would be a debate. They had five doctors and one lawyer. Plus, they had a vegan doctor to argue against Dr. Paul. There was a lot of yelling, and Dr. Paul was barely given a chance to say what he needed to say. Paul invited them to his podcast to have an honest and genuine debate. None of them showed up. If you want to watch it on YouTube, check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uaPrrg4tytE
[09:50] Why Dr. Paul Started To Eat More Carbohydrates
Ketosis at the beginning for Dr. Paul without carbohydrates in his diet seemed fine. Eventually, Dr. Paul was getting a lot of muscle cramps, and he was getting heart palpitations at night. So, Dr. Paul started to reintroduce carbohydrates into his diet. First, he started to introduce honey into his lifestyle. After incorporating honey, Dr. Paul started to feel better. Blood sugar will spike when you include carbohydrates in your diet, especially honey. However, Dr. Paul’s blood glucose tracing was very low.
[22:50] Why Dr. Paul Doesn’t Like The Term Insulin Resistance
Paul doesn’t like the term insulin resistance. He thinks metabolic dysfunction is a more precise term. He doesn't like to say insulin resistance because two types of insulin resistance are often confused and conflated. The first type of insulin resistance is physiologic insulin resistance. Humans have evolved a state known as ketosis, which goes hand in hand with physiologic insulin resistance. Then, there is pathological insulin resistance. Many people who exclude carbohydrates will see improvements in their physiology.

[00:40] How Pauline Started Her Journey To Health and Wellbeing
Many years ago, Pauline trained as a physical therapist. She kept seeing the same inflammatory-based conditions turning up. Terry Wahls inspired Pauline to look at nutrition at a much deeper level. Pauline loves to think about how nutrition can improve longevity and protect us against chronic disease. [07:20] Being More Preventative When It Comes To Covid
We can improve our immune function and make it more robust and more reactive when it needs to be. At the start of the pandemic, there was a lot of skepticism around vitamin D and zinc. Plus, there was a lot of skepticism around supplements, food, and the impact of nutrition. Now, it seems to be much more readily accepted in the conventional medical community. [17:30] Dual-Fuel Burning: What It Means and How To Achieve It
Ketones have been around for as long as we've been around as humans. We can burn two different types of fuel: ketones and glucose. It protects our body from essentially eating our muscles and ourselves to death if we go two or three days without food. Dual-fuel gives us the ability to go for long periods of time without food. We're carrying our own little refrigerator of food that we can access at any point. Dual-fuel keeps our mood stable. [21:00] It’s Incredible That We Have A Metabolically Flexible Body
Our brain is designed to be able to utilize glucose or ketones. However, the brain has a preference for ketones. If we eat some sweet potatoes, we will mop up that glucose and use it immediately. If you don’t eat carbs, then you will utilize the fat stored in your body. Pauline will fast from 6 pm to lunchtime the next day. She loves to have a core level of ketones. We h

Barton Scott | How to Support Your Keto Lifestyle With The RIGHT MINERALS KKP: 358

Today, I am blessed to have here with me again, Founder of Upgraded Formulas and a Chemical Engineer, Barton Scott.
Barton always had sharp cognitive function, but he began to suffer memory loss and mental fatigue. How could this be, at such an early age? To make matters worse, tragedy struck at the same time, when he unfortunately lost his mother.
Free 7 Day Keto Challenge: http://www.ketokampchallenge.com
After taking many supplements during this time frame, nothing was working. Faced with adversity and looming health issues, this is when he decided that he must pursue solutions.
He grew frustrated with how mineral supplements lacked effectiveness and absorption into the body rendering most products in the market useless.
He set out to fix the problem, using his background in Chemical Engineering and experience as a nutritionist, he was able to identify the issues with the current offerings and applied a solution based on sound science.
Through research, and many trials and errors, he realized if you could get mineral particles small enough to absorb into our cells, that was going to be the winning formula for effectiveness. That's where he applied nanotechnology to minerals, and developed a solution that makes the minerals we sell today completely bioavailable - the impact of which we can see during our testing protocols.
It was then that he set out to create what today is Upgraded Formulas, founded with maximum bioavailability and measurable absorption to ensure you are getting results.
In this episode, Barton Scott opens the show explaining the inspiration behind his company, Upgraded Formulas. Unfortunately, typical supplements and our food isn’t enough to get all of our minerals. Barton came up with a better way: highly-effective dietary supplements that are absorbed better by the body than any other products. Plus, Barton created a hair test that is ideal for determining your heavy metal toxicity and mineral deficiencies. Tune in as we talk about the importance of testing, which minerals will be helpful with keto, and Barton speaks about his 11-day water fast. Martha Carlin | How The Gut Microbiome Could Drive Brain Disorders KKP: 357

Today, I am blessed to have here with me Martha Carlin. She is a Citizen Scientist that takes a systems approach to looking at Parkinson's disease and finds the answers to PD and many chronic diseases may be in our poop.
Free 7 Day Keto Challenge: http://www.ketokampchallenge.com
When doctors said her husband’s Parkinson’s would eventually kill him, Martha Carlin said, “no it won’t.” She stepped out of a successful career as a systems expert and into the new role of Citizen Scientist. After years of re-learning the sciences, pouring over research (and commissioning work at the University of Chicago), Martha is now a leading source of deep data on the human biome to unlock preventions and cures for many of our most complex health conditions.
Her company, The BioCollective, links personal health history, metagenomics and microbiome analysis to uncover previously unknown links between chronic disease and diet, stress, and environment. She lives with her (thriving) husband John in Lone Tree, Colorado.
In this episode, Martha speaks about her obsession with the gut microbiome and how her research helped her husband's Parkinson's diagnosis. We talk about the differences between a healthy gut and an unhealthy gut. Martha reveals the top three things you need to avoid to improve your gut health. Later, we chat all about the products that Martha has developed as a result of her research. If you're interested in improving your gut health, you can find those formulas here: https://biotiquest.com/ (Use Code: KETOK15).

[00:30] Why Martha Is So Obsessed With The Gut Microbiome and The Research She’s Doing In Her Company
Martha’s 44-year-old otherwise healthy husband was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. So, Martha started to teach herself about science and the human body. Food and water are the main inputs in the human body. Martha threw out all the food that wasn’t organic. After ditching highly refined carbohydrates, Martha’s husband started to do much better than most people with Parkinson’s. Martha recommends reading Missing Microbes: How the Overuse of Antibiotics Is Fueling Our Modern Plagues: https://www.amazon.com/Missing-Microbes-Overuse-Antibiotics-Fueling/dp/1250069270/benazadi-20 [12:05] Comparing A Healthy Gut To An Unhealthy Gut
People who have a relative abundance of streptococcus are in some disease category. Streptococcus loves glucose. Elevated proteobacteria is another sign of an unhealthy gut. There’s a study suggesting that people who drink skim milk have a statistically significant increase in Parkinson's risk. [18:30] Glyphosate: The Main Problem That Is Disrupting Your Microbiome
The number one thing disrupting the gut microbiome is glyphosate. Most people do not understand how much the use of glyphosate has increased in the last thirty years. Glyphosate changes the biochemistry of the plant. Also, it changes the biochemistry of the soil, which changes the nutritional uptake of a plant. So, you need to eat as organic as possible. Also, make your legislators aware of the glyphosate problems. [23:55] Other Things You Should Avoid To Improve Your Gut Health
Avoid high fructose corn syrup. Highly processed sugars will have a significant impact on your microbiome and overall health. The highest consumption of high fructose corn syrup is usually

Ben saved my life

I’m not sure I have the proper words but I’ll try. Single mom that started to feel extremely off when my last baby was born 11 yrs ago. I went to an incredible number of doctors that brushed me off as the tired new mom. Finally a thyroid dysfunction was noted but none of the TWELVE endocrinologists I went to could properly read my labs and therefore all of them wanted to take my thyroid. I fought for 11 yrs until finally I had nodules the size of a grapefruit. A thyroidectomy of course exacerbated my issues. After listening to the advice of Ben and his incredible guests, I am on my way to a full recovery of my life. I thank you. My children thank you. So grateful for your work.
