127. Thought Ladders
In this episode, we explore the concept of "thought ladders" and how they can help us shift from negative thoughts to more positive ones. Remembering that our thoughts create our feelings, which in turn drive our actions and create our results. So, if we have a negative thought like "my life is a mess," it can lead to discouragement, self-judgment, and a feeling of being stuck.
However, simply trying to replace this thought with a positive one like "I love my life" may not be effective if the negative thought is deeply ingrained in our minds. Our brain is like a well-worn highway, and it takes time and effort to deconstruct that highway and create new pathways. That's where thought ladders come in.
Thought ladders are a series of gradual, baby thoughts towards a new thought that we want to believe. Instead of trying to make a drastic leap from negative to positive, we take small steps that are easier for our brain to accept. For example, if we start with the thought "my life is a mess," a ladder thought could be "I have a life" and then to "some people love their lives," "some parts of my life have been good in the past. Maybe I can again." To, "I love my life sometimes." These thoughts open up a little more hope and possibility, and as we continue to believe and practice these ladder thoughts, the old negative thought naturally dissolves away.
Thought ladders work because they allow our brain to move in the direction we want to go. But at a pace that is more manageable. It's difficult for our brain to make sudden shifts from one extreme to another. So taking small steps, helps us gradually shift our perspective. Additionally, these ladder thoughts help us feel emotions that are more useful and productive.
Overall, thought ladders provide a practical and effective approach for changing our thought patterns. And also creating a more positive mindset. Small steps and gradually shifting our perspective we can move from negative thoughts to more empowering ones. Which ultimately improving our feelings, actions, and results in life.

126. The Doing Diet
In this episode of "The Doing Diet," we explore the idea that we often tie our worth and value to the things we do. Using examples from some of my clients, who express fear and anxiety about not being able to do certain activities. Such as following a rigid schedule or going on a run. Upon further discussion, it becomes clear that their concern is not about the outcome of these activities, but rather how they would treat themselves or think about themselves if they didn't do them.
Sometimes these activities can become almost ritualistic, and we use them as a way to feel good about ourselves. However, it's not the activities themselves that give us worth and value, but rather the thoughts and beliefs we have about ourselves when we engage in these activities. I encourage us to consider if there is something in our own lives that we feel we have to do in order to be a good person, and to pay attention to the thoughts and beliefs that arise when we don't do these things.
The "Doing Diet," which involves purposely cutting out certain activities in order to separate our worth and value from what we do. Let's start practicing the belief that we are still good people with value and worth, even when we don't engage in these activities. I recently challenged a client to run one less day per week and to practice untangling their worth from running on that day.
Overall, in this episode we explore the idea of separating our worth and value from the activities we engage in, and I encourages all of us to practice self-acceptance and self-worth regardless of what we do or don't do.

125. Exceptional Leadership
In this week's podcast episode, we discusses what makes up exceptional leadership. We start by talking about my personal experience of growing my business. I transitioned from working with individual clients to hiring coaches and mentors to expand the reach of helping missionaries. I had to go through multiple identity shifts to become a boss and leader to my new team. I recently attended a life coach mastermind event. I was able to listen to a talk on leadership by Erica Royal, the CEO of The Life Coach School. This talk resonated with me because it challenged my preconceived notions of what a leader should look like. So in this episode, we discuss how some leadership could be harmful and seen as controlling. Sometimes it's beneficial to redefine our own understanding of leadership in becoming a leader.
Several key points from Erica's talk about exceptional leadership is, vulnerability, rather than strength, is a crucial aspect of leadership. The importance of being curious and willing to learn, instead of having all the answers. Being open-minded and transparent is more valuable than being decisive. Professionalism is not the only defining factor of leadership. Just to name a few.
Overall, in this episode we dive into the concept of exceptional leadership. Challenging traditional beliefs and highlighting the importance of qualities such as vulnerability, curiosity, open-mindedness, and transparency. I encourage listeners to reevaluate their own understanding of leadership and consider these alternative perspectives.

124. Stop Chasing Happy
In this episode, we explore why we should stop chasing happiness. I received an email from a missionary mom, who expressed concern about her son. Her son believed happiness was always in the future, even when he could potentially be feeling it in the present. This prompted me to dive deeper into the concept of happiness. What it actually is? How to obtain it? and What prevents us from recognizing when we are happy?
We discuss idea that we as humans don't want to just be half happy or half frustrated. We want to experience a full range of emotions. Our desire for happiness stems from our innate need to feel all emotions. And happiness is not something that can be chased or obtained externally. Instead, happiness is an emotion that is created within our bodies and can only be experienced in the present moment.
Happiness is an emotion felt in the body. It can be experienced by getting out of our heads and into our bodies. Through this process, one can discover the physical sensations associated with happiness, such as warmth or a specific color. Happiness cannot be given or received from others, as it is an individual experience.
In this episode we also touch on the obstacles that prevent us from accessing or noticing happiness. These include viewing happiness as a destination or future event. Chasing happiness through external circumstances, and not allowing ourselves to be happy when others are not. The importance of learning how to love oneself and others even when happiness is not present.
Overall, we aim to shift the perspective on happiness and to stop chasing it as an external goal. Instead, the focus on being present. Embracing and experiencing the full range of emotions, we learn to love ourselves and others through all of life's ups and downs. Stop chasing happiness, it's felt within our bodies.

123. What I Learned at the Faith Matters Gathering
In this week's episode, I talk all about, "What I learned at the Faith Matters Gathering."
I had the most amazing experience as I went to the Faith Matters Restore Gathering. I met the most amazing people and had the wonderful opportunity to talk with so many of you.
I didn't get a chance to listen to every single talk. I was busy with my coaches at the booth that we had there. But, I did learn a lot of things. I learned things from the conversations we had. I learned things from observing people and I learned things from what I felt.
Listen in to learn the things that I learned in attending the Faith Matters Event and in preparing for the Faith Matters Event. Perhaps the things I learned will be of use to you on your mission or in your life in some small way.
Check Out Faith Matters and all of the incredible work they are doing HERE

122. When the "Why" is Useful
In this podcast episode, we discuss the usefulness of asking "why" questions. I begin by explaining how our brains naturally gravitate towards asking why, as it keeps us in a state of questioning ourselves and our circumstances. However, constantly asking why can lead to confusion and hinder our ability to move forward.
I use an analogy of being on a boat in the middle of a lake to illustrate how asking why can keep us stuck and prevent us from taking action. They describe how certain emotions, such as confusion, worry, and overwhelm, can act like a fog that keeps us comfortably sitting in the boat without having to put in the effort to row towards our goals.
We then dive into specific examples of unhelpful why questions, such as asking why certain things happen or why we feel a certain way. These questions only lead to more questioning and judgment of ourselves and our circumstances. I emphasize that while these emotions may feel indulgent, they do not serve us in moving forward.
On the other hand, we highlight the importance of asking the question "what is my why?" or understanding our purpose. This type of why question propels us forward and helps us focus on what we want to create in the future. Examples of useful why questions include wanting to make a difference for others, transforming oneself, or aligning with who we want to be.
We conclude the podcast episode by acknowledging that we may not always have the answers to why questions about our past actions or experiences. However, having a clear understanding of our purpose can provide motivation and guidance in challenging times. The importance of our values help determine our why and how we show up in the world.
