Episode Thirty-One: The Eternal Return (ft. Dennis Lim and Tom McCarthy)

With The Return long concluded and the once-shiny Blu-Ray sets gathering dust, The Lodgers must come to an end. Opting to try and take things out with a bang, Kate and Simon are joined by not one but two special guests: Dennis Lim, author of David Lynch: The Man From Another Place, and Tom McCarthy, big-deal novelist (Remainder, Satin Island, C) and cultural critic. It’s a wide-ranging conversation we’re pretty sure longtime fans will savor.

    Episode Thirty: Unwrapping The Return

Christmas has come early for Kate and Simon, whose gratis copies of Twin Peaks‘ third season on Blu-Ray prompted the first of two concluding episodes of The Lodgers. In this episode, Kate and Simon fly solo to go over the set’s bonus features and take a few minutes to acknowledge the state of the critical discourse surrounding the season.

Episode Twenty-Eight: [redacted on FBI orders] (ft. Miriam Bale)

Part 16 of The Return marks the eventful continuation of the series’ climax, including at least one massive event fans have been anticipating for many weeks: the return of Jerry Horne! And also maybe the thing that happened with Cooper. Writer Miriam Bale (of the NYT, W Magazine, The New Republic, and many other fine establishments) joins Kate and Simon to eulogize several supporting players, ponder our expectations for the series’ endgame, and [say very nice things about the FBI].

Episode Twenty-Nine: Enjoy Yourself, it's Later Than You Think (ft. Adam Nayman and the cast of The Lodgers)

After a considerable, scheduling-necessitated delay, we've brought back Adam Nayman to help us consider just where the season’s final episodes take us, how they affect our view of the series as a whole, and just what the hell we’re all going to do with our lives now. Also, we invited former guests of the show to chip in with their finale and series thoughts!

Thanks to our listeners for their feedback and attention.

Episode Twenty-Seven: Goodnight, Margaret (ft. Byron Davies)

An emotionally intense and cathartic episode of The Return sparks a wide-ranging discussion with returning guest Byron Davies. Touched upon: whether we can allow/permit ourselves to accept Ed and Norma’s happy ending, The Return‘s handling of the woods as a space of evil and mystery; the possible fates of Becky and Steven; the implications of Cooper’s possible liberation/awakening via Sunset Boulevard, and, of course, our final goodbye to Margaret Lanterman, the Log Lady, and Catherine Coulson.

Kate Rennebohm is a National Treasure!

The very BEST in film insight & analysis applied to Twin Peaks and Lynch films. I can’t tell you how much I appreciated Kate’s incredible knowledge and enthusiasm for Twin Peaks + great editing by her partner & smart, interesting guests. I would love to see the team back for new deep dive analysis when they’re ready. Definitely miss their voices!

Sometimes...other times...

Most of the time I learn so much, and truly appreciate the work these two put in- this in conjunction with Diane I’d say are the two best and most informative engrossing podcasts on Twin Peaks.

Sometimes I think they fall into that unfortunate mode of using pessimism in place of intellectual breadth and/or even just letting the show breathe and trust that it may intentionally be trying things that don’t work as well as others, I do get tripped up by those moments but overall its really brilliant and worth the time!

The Best Television and How to Talk About It

Twin Peaks has now left an indelible mark on my life; a dream I can’t forget. For me, this sort of thing is best served with a healthy portion of solitude and rumination and reflection that you can’t quite get in a room of people with a work that begs to be discussed like Twin Peaks does. But after watching Lynch and Frost’s 3 seasons and then watching them again with this podcast as supplement, I begin to realize or remember, from all of those years of watching programs with my folks, that Television is a collective experience, maybe more than any other art form. Kate and Simon do such a beautiful job of opening up this proverbial can of worms that is Lynch’s opus by getting to what is maybe the point of any piece of really deliberate craft and self-expression with an audience in mind; that you, the audience, are a part of the work. It was never the point with this podcast, as so much television criticism and Twin Peaks discussions seem to think, to dissect all of the narrative connections and to suss out every detail of reasoning and plot. And while it may be our initial reaction to look for a continuous narrative thread, there is so much more hidden underneath this formality. Lynch, with all of his work, gives us the greatest gift he can; a filmic world through which we can experience a very simple and deliberate exposure of his mind and, in turn, our own. And Kate and Simon seem to realize that the best thing that we can do to appreciate this is to project onto this world with our own meanings and interpretations as an audience. Twin Peaks truly is the greatest television of all time because it does live in our world much like a dream that, while not real, lingers in our minds and represents terrible and beautiful truths. While beloved characters are being killed off in Game of Thrones and hackers are dismantling a Late Capitalist America in Mr. Robot, Twin Peaks is shocking us in more real ways; is reflecting our current time and place with greater accuracy because David Lynch accepts no filter on his mind. It was such a pleasure to experience this with such a dedicated group of individuals. Thank you.
