A Masterclass in Logo Design Theory - with Michael Shumate

A Masterclass in Logo Design Theory - with Michael Shumate

Michael Shumate taught Graphic Design for twenty five years. In his second week of teaching, he told a student that the logo concept he was working on would not make a professional identity design. The student asked, “Why?” But Micheal couldn't provide an adequate answer, but was certain some principle was being violated.
He set out on a quest to discover the underlying principles of logo design. It's been a twenty-five year quest that lead Michael to look deeply at identity design and to seek for those constant, unchanging principles. Fads in art and design come and go. But principles don’t. Principles are enduring; they stand the test of time.
In this weeks episode Ian interviews Michael to discover what these principles are. We discover the 7 deadly sins of logo design, an effective approach to brainstorm ideas and more. We also discuss Michaels book 'Logo Design Theory', which is now on its second edition.

Customer & UX Research in Branding - An interview with Michele Ronsen

How can you properly understand the audience you plan to target? How can you make sure the logo designs you create will attract the right person? How can you know if the identity you create will actually perform? The only way to know for sure is to use customer and UX research.
To learn more, Ian interviews Michele Ronsen, the founder of Curiosity Tank, an agency who specialises in design and user research.
In this episode we take a deep dive into User Research, to understand how it can be applied throughout the entire stretch of a brand identity design project from start to finish. From the customer research you can carry out prior to starting a project, right through to testing a logo design with the desired audience.
Michele is an executive with more than twenty years of experience in academia, start-ups, and the Fortune 500s, and she's worked with clients including Slack, Xero, Microsoft, Facebook, PayPal and many more!

Using Semiotics in Logo Design with Dr Rachel Lawes

Using Semiotics in Logo Design with Dr Rachel Lawes

The world around us, and the culture we live in has a massive impact on all of us unconsciously. The study of Semiotics can allow us to understand this by looking at how meaning is created and communicated, which is knowledge we can use to design more effective logos and brand identities.
The origins of Semiotics lie in the academic study of how signs and symbols (visual and linguistic) create meaning. But now, it’s become a methodology for researching and analysing consumer behaviour and brand communications.
On this weeks podcast Ian interviews consumer psychologist, Dr Rachel Lawes to learn more about Semiotics, and how it can be used when developing a logo and brand identity.
Rachel is the author of Using Semiotics in Marketing, and is recognised as one of the original founders of commercial semiotics. She has supplied brand strategy and consumer insight to major brands in 20 countries, including Unilever, P&G, Kraft, Tesco, The Discovery Channel and many more.
