Low Light is an ongoing narrated audio drama set in a northern English town. It has a darkish edge and a sense of humour (says me).
Meet the neighbours of Lower Leigh - the well-meaning, the curious and the devious. There is everything and nothing humdrum about these folk, puttering about their little lives or making trouble as they will. And of course, there are those among them who gaze out into the low light and tell their stories about a different world...sometimes with unusual consequences.
One cold February evening, a Storyteller dies suddenly, releasing the old dark track from its moorings and with it, tales from the past start to unravel...
...meanwhile, the criminals in the vicinity are embarking on a new project as the community mourns the loss of one of their most beloved members.
During testing times, new alliances form, old relationships crumble and its no different here except...except that in the dark earth of the track and in the tangled undergrowth and in every building’s shadowed corners there are ideas, old and new, some with wings, some with teeth and claws, testing their broken boundaries and looking for a bit of fun menacing the local human population.
Can anything be done to re-balance the equilibrium of Lower Leigh or is everyone too lazy or daft to come up with a viable plan?
Get your coat on and those wellies on standby and we’ll go and have a look and find out, shall we? Well, come on then!
Recommended to listen in episode order.
Written, narrated and produced by Melanie Crawley for Crawley Voice Studio.
Episode One. Under a Fingernail Moon.
On a cold northern street, murder is afoot. Neighbours gather to lament (the curious and the devious). The moon hangs, dispassionate.
Episode Two. Owl’s Eye View.
The neighbours reel in shock as the police arrive to ask questions. Eric begins to realise the implications of what has happened. One girl runs away, another keeps quiet. There are strange alliances forming as the night’s events threaten to force change on the small community.
Episode Three. Fox Abroad.
The neighbours gather in the pub to discuss events. Tanya feels she must act and gives Lance an ultimatum.
The friends rush to support Eric in his grief. After many years silence, Eric tells the story of his and Padma's transformation. There's a glimmering in the air and in the lantern room.
The fox runs through cold streets, becoming snowy in the low light.
Episode Four. A Crowlet’s Sense of Humour.
This week Lower Leigh is blanketed in snow as dark forces gather.
The neighbours discuss a celebration for Padma, the police continue their enquiries and Eric tries (again) to explain the significance of Padma's death. Kat makes a confession about Henry.
Episode Five. Crow Show.
The snow lies deep in Lower Leigh as the neighbours gather to discuss a celebration of Padma's life at the local theatre. Charity is there, despite having agreed to meet Tanya at High Noon. Louis brings news to the gathering and Eric takes to the stage for the first time in two years to expand on the story he began the night before. This time, the crows are listening and the wind waits impatiently.
Episode Six. Moth or Mim?
Tanya and Charity meet after they both attend the planning meeting for Padma's celebration. Accusations are made and warnings are given, driving charity away to contemplate her mistakes. The dark track is waiting for her and the Mims are unsettled as the cold day draws to a close. Eric and Gavin investigate the extent of the damage so far...
A lovely balance of whodoneit, unknown mystical power, and characters that aren’t perfect in a way that makes them feel realistic
I’m anxiously awaiting the next episode!
Great podcast all around. Mystery, humor, and the supernatural all in one. Keep going, Crawley, darling!
