    Episode-53

Dr. Linda Silverman, licensed psychologist and founder and director of Gifted Development Center/ISAD, joins us in today's episode to discuss adult giftedness. On this episode, we discuss the inner lives of the gifted adult and take a deep dive into overexcitability and how along with intensity and sensitivity, are often characteristics of the highly gifted.
"Giftedness is not what you do or how hard you work. It is who you are. You think differently. You experience life intensely. You care about injustice. You seek meaning. You appreciate and strive for the exquisite. You are painfully sensitive. You are extremely complex. You cherish integrity. Your truth-telling has gotten you in trouble. Should 98% of the population find you odd, seek the company of those who love you just the way you are. You are not broken. You do not need to be fixed. You are utterly fascinating."
    - Dr. Linda Silverman Linda Kreger Silverman, Ph.D., is a licensed clinical and counseling psychologist. She directs the Institute for the Study of Advanced Development, and its subsidiary, the Gifted Development Center (GDC) in Denver, Colorado, which has assessed over 6,500 children in the last 40 years. This is the largest data base on the gifted population. She and her colleagues at GDC have developed 40 instruments. For nine years she served on the faculty of the University of Denver (DU), in Counseling Psychology and Gifted Education. She developed a course on Assessment of the Gifted at DU, which was also a short course taught abroad. She has been studying the assessment, psychology and education of the gifted since 1961 and has written over 300 articles, chapters and books, including the textbook, Counseling the Gifted and Talented, adopted at 50 colleges. Her latest book, Giftedness 101 (Springer, 2013), contains a chapter on assessment. It has been translated into Korean and Swedish.

    Ms. Mark

    Ms. Mark

Ms. Paula Hagen (formerly known as Ms. Mark), a retired high school English teacher, and Dr. Velez's former teacher, comes on the show to discuss the path which lead her to become an educator. Ms. Mark, (as her former students would call her) shares details about her life growing up as a gifted child and teen and shares how it would later influence her passion for teaching gifted teens in the predominantly Spanish-speaking community of Hialeah, Florida. Ms. Mark also discusses how she was relentless in the pursuit of helping students dream big and reach their academic potential.

Ms. Mark is more than an educator, she is a beacon of light who planted daily seeds of hope and inspiration into the hearts of her students. It only takes one adult to believe in you, and Ms. Mark was that person to many. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of former students blooming thanks to her influence.
    -With love and appreciation, Erika

Amazing Podcast!

Hello! I’ve been tuning into Podcasts for sometime now trying to find the ones that fuel my heart & soul. I must say that, THIS ONE IS EVERYTHING! I just tuned into my 3rd one this week and loved it. I learned about this Podcast through my dear friend Karen Duque who shared it on her stories as she was invited to speak recently. I just listened to the one with Gaby MUA and creator of Alamar makeup line and resonated so much with everything you both spoke of. I’m a local Miami Photographer, growing my brand and business daily. I decided to leave the Corporate World behind 7 years ago, dropping a steady income, without a plan, without knowing where I was headed, being in my 30’s, married with two kids and a long list of expenses. It’s been by far the hardest decision of my life thus far but one I thank GOD for making, everyday.

Psychology & Spirituality is something I have always loved, even as a child but, I let it slip by. I allowed society to guide my life and although I wish I wouldn’t have, it’s lead me to where I am. Today at 39 years young (turning the big 40 this year), besides being a lifestyle photographer (which I am obsessed with) — all I want is to continue living as mindfully as I am, showing this way of life to my children (currently 16&12) and being able to share my experiences & purpose with our youth, our future leaders. I feel a huge tug at my heart each day to “Be the girl you needed when you were younger”. I’ve had to learn so much on my own as an adult so I feel driven to share it with others in hopes that learn earlier on the many benefits that come with a mindful mind, heart and soul. I shared this Podcast with my daughter and two of her close friends already.

Thank you for sharing such amazing information and spreading goodness into the world. These days, we need all the good we can get. I will be tuning into many more of your episodes as the days go by. It’s my therapy when I sit long hours to edit. Wishing you abundance & continued success in all that your heart desires and all that you do!

Much Love & Light,
Betsy Marotto
