The Mindset of an Olympian with Suni Rao What's Next with Mike Draper

    • Personal Journals

What does it take to be an Olympian? What kind of mindset do you need to have to persevere in the most challenging moments – mind, body and soul.

In this episode, I sit down with Suni Rao, to hear her perspective on greatness and stepping into what’s next.

At the age of 23, Suni retired from nearly a decade of playing tennis professionally and competing on the world's largest stages - including the 2008 Beijing Olympics - with a sixth grade education, quite literally no money and very little knowledge of how the world worked outside of her sport.

Since then, she has earned a bachelor's in business and finance and an MBA from Villanova University.

She is the Chief Sanity Officer at Afford Anything, a digital finance and investing platform that incorporates behavioral science, metacognition and other interdisciplinary fields to its teaching approach on finance, investing and life design.

Suni is also the co-host on the First Friday series within the Afford Anything podcast, called Invest Anywhere, focused on teaching the Afford Anything audience about how to invest in real estate at a distance. The Afford Anything podcast is currently downloaded at an ongoing rate of around 500,000 new downloads per month and more than 21 million total downloads.

Additionally, Suni has founded a growing real estate business with seven doors in her portfolio. Her goal is to achieve financial freedom while also having a positive impact on others' lives by purchasing and repairing distressed properties.

Listen in as we talk about:

[2:00] Suni’s start in sports and how it got her to the Olympics
[4:40] The mindset, habits and routine to become the best in your craft
[6:45] How Suni handled distractions along the way
[10:50] Suni’s targets and what pushed her so hard to keep going
[15:00] How Suni figured out what was next for her, after retiring from tennis
[22:05] What made her let go of tennis
[28:35] Why having support from friends and family is critical
[35:10] What’s next for Suni
