The Not So KOREAN Podcast Jason Verney

In episode 44, which was recorded a few days ago and just before leaving for South Korea, Jay not only elaborates on his 'sudden Spring' over to South Korea and it being the 10th visit to Korea in 12 years, but also speaks about why he chose to do this.

You'll hear how Jay, having only left Korea in Winter [2023] & now revisiting less than 4 months later in Spring [2024, intends to spend his next few weeks - or maybe a couple of months - in Korea.

Not only are there details of various places on Jay's list, like Cheongju, Seoul, Busan, Jeongju and Jeju Island but also reasons for choosing those places and how some of these opportunites arose.  On top of that, you'll also find out about film festivals, Korean film as well as regarding Korean culture in other countries - these include Korean-related events & topics from the nearby countries of Thailand and Vietnam!

Lastly, but something which plays a large part in this 10th trip of Jay's to Korea, is the subject of the 10th anniversary of the Sewol ferry tragedy.

In this episode [no. 42], we speak with musician, dog lover and activist Annie Ko about South Korea's recent announcement to ban dog meat consumption and the existence of dog meat farms - of which there have been apparently 10.000+ in South Korea - and her experience & involvement with the various organisations which have been doing their best to raise awareness and rescue dogs from such farms.

As a bit of background, in January 2024, South Korea passed a law which bans dog-meat & therefore the capture, killing and supplying & selling of dogs to consumers for eating. So, essentially, a ban on the production, sale & the torture which leads to the consumption of Dog-Meat.

Annie explains about her experience of consuming dog meat, but also the origins of dog-meat and dog-eating in a once poverty stricken South korea and touches on the festival associated with dog-meat. We also chat about what can go on 'behind the scenes' of certain pet shops and pet owners in South Korea, the recent "Nureongi" documentary and its impact - a link to this documentary can be found below this description and Annie & Toby's beloved and rescued pet dog, Deejay!

Although a lot is covered in this interview with Annie it is clear that one of her more recently found passions is one of caring for dogs, including their adopted "Deejay the Dog" and of course her love of music and continuing to be one part of the Seoul-based electric rock duo Love X Stereo.

It's also clear that we’ve a long way to go in this world until we end cruelty across the board to living animals and sentient beings, but this focuses on man’s - and woman’s - best friends, DOGS!

In this episode [no. 41], Jay announces the news about two interviews coming your way in February and March, and the which start next week, in episode 42.

The first of these guests is Annie Ko, one part of the Seoul-based electric rock duo Love X Stereo and who speaks to us about the recent ban on breeding, slaughtering & ultimately the sale of dog-meat in South Korea, and and her involvement in this. It is suggested that you see some of the links (articles and documentaries) below to get a bit of an understanding of the dog-meat controversy, the new ban and Annie's involvement.

A lot is covered in this upcoming interview with Annie and we are proud and excited to bring it to you.

The second guest, whose interview will feature in March is Ana Bondarenko and she runs a multicultural open art/print/design studio and art café in a beautiful city Busan, South Korea.

This interview should give new perspectives on various aspects relating to living and working in South Korea.
