IFS and Dissociation with Joanne Twombly
On today's episode I chat with Certified IFS Therapist Joanne Twombly. Joanne wrote a chapter entitled "Integrating Phase Oriented Treatment of Clients with Dissociative Disorders" in the IFS: New Dimensions book found here: Internal Family Systems Therapy: New Dimensions | IFS Institute (ifs-institute.com)
Here are all the Controversial (in the IFS world!) topics we cover:
- Why we still need coping skills
- Firedrill exercise to quickly unblend from parts
- Integrating IFS into Phase Oriented Treatment
- Why Diagnosis is helpful
- Burdens (and Self!) in Managers, Firefighters and Exiles
- Safe Spaces
- Hypnosis and Trance States
Little warning: We talk about Trauma so there is a point (about 49 minutes) that is upsetting and can be triggering.

IFS and Moving Towards with Jenna Riemersma
I'm super excited to welcome back to the podcast my friend, Jenna Riemersma. Jenna and I were chatting about her concept of 'Moving Towards' and decided to do another episode together. Jenna is such an amazing teacher, and I am thrilled that she shares her wisdom with us.
I felt so much Self energy and calmness in the middle of the podcast I forgot to ask about her 'Three Steps!'. Thankfully, she reminded my parts who got back online quickly.
Here is an outline:
- Burdened parts move against
- Move against in our culture (politics, covid)
- The Power of the Self and the IFS model
- The 8 C qualities of Self= What Love does and What Love looks like
- Move towards starts with me then moves to we
- Living a Move Toward kind of life - especially in our advocacy
- Betrayal Trauma (Jenna explains the role of parts for both parties)
- Psychological theories and Trauma
- Attachment (External and Internal) ---This is SO GOOD!
- Three Steps of Moving Towards
- All Together You - her book about Moving towards in Faith Communities
I took so many notes.
Check out her website for SO MANY free resources:

Jenna says, "We are way more than the Burden of One (or some) of our parts. We are the Self behind that."
IFS and Beyond Hopelessness and Despair with Jim Abrams
On today's episode I chat again with my first guest ever, Jim Abrams. Jim is a frequent program assistant at IFS trainings so he is well known by many. Jim emailed me checking in and sharing lessons he is learning, and we wanted to share them with you!
1. When a problem becomes real.
2. Changing ones experience of the circumstances.
3. Holding and honoring parts who feel sad, grief, worry and joy simultaneously.
4. Sometimes we need someone else.
5. Polarities- Life is hard and life is joyful
6. It is scary to be hopeful.
7. Holding the parts who hold the pain.
Here is my favorite quote:
"We are not asking the part to be hopeful. We are asking the system to bring comfort and connection to that part so its experience of the circumstance changes."
You can email Jim at Jim.firstname.lastname@example.org

IFS and Self Led Civility and a lot of Funk with David Medeiros
On today's episode I chat with David Mederios, Level Two trained IFS therapist. David has been a program assistant for multiple level one and level two trainings. He has presented at several annual IFS conferences. He spent a year working with Dr. Richard Schwartz and co-presented their experience treating someone diagnosed with Schizophrenia at an annual IFS Conference. David and I have a lot of a laughs throughout this '101' episode.

His presentation and experience with his patient with Schizophrenia
Drumming Lessons: asking for help and life lessons
His book. Civility and Responsibility. Working with Families struggling in Domestic Violence
His goal in writing his book- especially in light of the 2020 election, Capital Riots, and Covid.
The Foundation for Self Leadership Web series- He is co-leading the first one. STARTS 9/3/21
I tell a little bit about my upcoming book, "The One Inside: 30 Days to Your Authentic Self."

IFS and No Bad Parts with Richard Schwartz
Here we are! - Together for the 100th episode with Dick Schwartz.
Dick has always been supportive and kind to me- from meeting him when I came out of a consultation group and he was standing in a hallway alone, to an unfortunate situation at a conference. He has been open and available for this podcast, and I am so grateful.
Dick has a new book out this week called "No Bad Parts," which we planned to talk about. And we do- a little bit.
What happened during our chat was we just started catching up. Then this transitioned to us both sharing some things 'off the record.'
And, of course, Dick does not want to just TALK about the model- he wants to do it. So he says to me, "We can do a little piece of work if you want ..." How could I not agree!?
So, that is what a big piece of this episode is- a demo of the model. You get to hear Dick doing the model and you get to hear me working with my parts.
My hope for you is that you are able to go down your own trailheads as you listen. My hope for you is you learn something about this model. My hope for you is you get to witness the founder of IFS facilitate a session.
Here is a bit of an outline:
- Checking in
- Dick's 'obsessed with IFS' part
- Demonstration of the Model (from about 15 minutes until about 40 minutes)
- The book- No Bad Parts
- Bigger Plans for IFS
Check out the silly faces we made on my social media pages :)
