ABOUT ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK
Orange is the New Black comes from "Weeds" creator Jenji Kohan about a women’s prison drama with comedy that takes no prisoners. Based on the acclaimed memoir of the same name by Piper Kerman, the series is about engaged Brooklynite Piper Chapman, whose decade-old relationship with drug-runner Alex results in her arrest and year-long detention in a federal penitentiary. To pay her debt to society, Piper must trade her comfortable New York life with fiancé Larry, for an orange prison jumpsuit and a baffling prison culture where she is forced to question everything she believes about herself and the world at large. As she struggles to adjust to her new reality, she finds unexpected laughter, tears, conflict and camaraderie amidst an eccentric and outspoken group of inmates.

Where are the rest the final season?

Transphobic bootlickers

It’s really difficult to listen to commentary on a show about women in prison by people who’ve done no research on the issues at hand. The ignorance of all but one commentator is really depressing. The writers of this show have clearly researched the prison industrial complex, and deserve commentary from people who’ve done the same—as do the incarcerated women reflected in these stories. Maybe I sound like I’m taking the show too seriously, but having worked with the formerly incarcerated I see this show as important representation that should not be regularly undermined by uneducated podcasters. Commentary should add, not subtract.

Casual racists

After seven minutes into the latest episode (three of season seven), I had to shut it off. I was so offended by their ignorance and dismissive commentary concerning Warden Ward. (I am not a black woman.) Their racism literally made me nauseous. Looking for an updated OITNB podcast, I was willing to set aside their unintelligent banter. But once they smugly and weakly shared their inane and racist comments, I had to shut it off. You think that the drug-smuggling, moronic Hopper should have been warden and dismiss Ward entirely out of hand? Yes, Linda admits she did it for the diversity grant, but who are you to second-guess a black character’s insight into affirmative action? Check your privilege, Ladies.
