    This week we are going to look at how PEMF can greatly benefit eye diseases including macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, retinitis pigmentosa and others because it is effective in increasing micro-circulation in the eye, decreasing inflammation and assisting in nerve repair.
    The eyes are complex organs which are heavily reliant on a of balanced blood flow and eye pressure to perform their critical functions. The eye contains many interrelated parts that combine to transmit light to the retina where it is translated into electrical messages and sent to the brain through the optic nerve. The cornea, pupil, lens, and iris are the parts we see in the mirror, while the retina, macular and optic nerve with all their smaller parts, such as rods and cones, hide behind the scenes.
    Light enters the eye through the cornea. The amount of light entering the eye is controlled by the iris and the pupil. The lens focusses the light as it travels through the vitreous liquid to the retina. The retina has small photoreceptor cells called rods and cones. The rods are responsible for detection of light in low-light environments. The cones are responsible for detection of light in bright-light environments and differentiate colour and detect detail.
    When light strikes the rod and cone cells a process called phototransduction cascade  is initiated where light is converted into electrical signals and then transmitted along the optic nerve to the visual cortex of the brain.
    As light travels through the eye there are various diseases that impede its journey or its detection by the retina. We are going to look at the various diseases of the eyes, how they occur, what parts of the eye they effect, and how PEMF can help with each.
    Macular degeneration is the loss of vision, or the distortion (blurring) of the central vision which is caused by the progressive degeneration of the macula. This can result in difficulty recognizing faces, reading, viewing a computer screens or driving – basically anything requiring fine visual detection.
    The macula is the small 5.5 mm oval-shaped area in the center of the retina which contains the fovea at its center. The six million cone light receptor cells which are responsible for the detection of finer image details are spread throughout the eye but concentrated mostly in the fovea.
    It is believed that macular degeneration is caused by oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and inflammation.  Contributing factors have been identified as hypertension, atherosclerosis, high cholesterol, obesity, too much of the wrong fat intake. Omega-3 fatty acids are helpful.
    There are two types of degeneration, dry (atrophic) Age Related Macular Degeneration (or Dry AMD) and wet (neovascular) macular degeneration (Wet MD).
    DRY AMD – is caused by cellular debris accumulating between the retina and the choroid causing scarring and degeneration of cells. (The choroid is the thin vascular area layer which carries the blood between the retina and the sclera). These debris, (called drusen), are a buildup of extracellular proteins and lipids in the macular which cause damage to the retina over time. The macula slowly thins out and dries or atrophies as part of the aging process. These deposits are thought to be related to high cholesterol deposits. Between 80-90% of AMD cases are dry.
    WET MD – is caused by the blood vessels between the retina and the sclera (in an area called the choroid) growing abnormally. The abnormal vessels are usually weak and can leaking protein fluids or sometimes bleed (hemorrhage) behind the retina causing scaring and damage to the photoreceptors cones.

    This week on the PEMF-SHOW we will be discussing how PEMF has been found to be a very effective in the treatment of stress, anxiety and depression without the side effects that medications can cause. Rather than introducing foreign substances into the brain, PEMF electrically excites the neurons to dispense their own natural chemicals, helping to balance out deficiencies and restore normal brain function.
    What is Stress?
    One of the biggest challenges we face today is stress. Stress is psychological pain caused by strain and pressure in life. Stress can be beneficial when it is encouraging healthy behaviour in athletic performance, it can be motivational. It can be a defense mechanism that triggers a “fight or flight” response.
    When the body is under stress the brain is triggered to administer adrenalin into the blood along with sugars the body has stored so that the muscles can be energized for immediate action. Some organs will slow down, and blood will be retracted from the stomach, so it can be used elsewhere. This will sometimes create a feeling of nausea as the body needs to re-appropriate its resources and therefore it may vomit the contents of the stomach to use the blood for more immediate needs.
    However, excessive stress can lead to bodily harm, especially when there appears to be “no way out” of a situation. Stress causes reactions in the body such as an increased heart rate, sweating, clammy feeling, increased breathing, and over time it can lead to anxiety attacks, heart disease and diabetes. Stress has also been linked to fatigue, immune problems, anxiety and depression. It is estimated that stress is responsible for 70% of the problems doctors have to deal with.
    Stress can also trigger unhealthy behaviour used by people to cope with stress. This can include overeating or eating the foods which trigger chemistry in the brain that is temporarily calming (i.e. comfort foods, junk foods). People also turn to alcohol or drugs to cope with the pressure. Many drugs are prescribed by physicians and can lead to addiction.
    Some of the other side effects of stress are insomnia, irritability, headaches, high blood pressure (hypertension), an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia), fatigue, asthma, rashes, hyperventilation, and a host of other issues.
    What is Anxiety?
    Anxiety is a state of constant worry about potential stresses, real or perceived, which can bring on physical symptoms. Anxiety can become long-lasting, in which case, it is termed a generalized anxiety disorder. Different phobias can develop which lead to panic disorders.
    According to author Dr. Joseph Mercola in his book What Anxiety Does to Your Brain and What You Can Do About It, anxiety is a healthy and natural response which can become unhealthy if over stimulated:
    Anxiety is a natural, normal response to potential threats, which puts your body into a heightened state of awareness. When felt appropriately, anxiety is beneficial and can keep you out of harm’s way… the anxiety you may feel while hiking near a steep drop-off, for instance, will cause you to be more careful and purposeful in your movements.
    For an estimated 40 million US adults, however, anxiety may occur even when there’s no real threat, causing unnecessary stress and emotional pain. While many believe anxiety and stress to be the same, persistent anxiety actually evokes quite a different experience in your brain. (1)
    Anxiety is a defensive mechanism that is designed to trigger hormones to heighten reflexes, raise the heart rate, and increase circulation to allow you to respond more quickly. Anxiety is usually the result of fear from internal thought mechanisms. The National Institute of Mental Health describes some of the mechanisms involved in anxiety:

    This week on the PEMF-SHOW we will be discussing how Pulsed Electro Magnetic Field Therapy can help people suffering with chronic pain. We will explore the mechanics of pain in the human body and how PEMF can help with both the symptoms and the underlying causes. We will discuss how PEMF can be a viable alternative to narcotics and opioids in today’s pill-popping pain treatment culture.
    The mechanics of sensations
    The human body has a communication system which connects to the brain. The brain works like a supercomputer receiving and transmitting messages through a network comprised of nerves cells.
    The nerve cells are called neurons. The neurons have a nucleolus at the center which are connected to dendrites and axons – like a wiring mechanism of the nerves  . The dendrites convey messages into the nucleolus, they are the input wires. The axons convey messages away from the nucleolus, they are the output wires.
    Nerve cells connect at the axon terminals where the synapses are located. The axon of once nerve cell (the output) will connect to the dendrite of another nerve cell (the input), passing the message along. This happens at the axon terminal through chemical molecules called neurotransmitters.
    According to medical wisdom, neurons cannot regenerate, but damaged axons can.
    There are two basic networks of nerve cells:
    1)         The central nervous system, whose axons are situated in the brain, the eye and the spinal cord (like the wires inside a computer).
    2)         The peripheral nervous system, whose axons are situated outside of the central nervous system (like network wires).
    Messages are transferred from the axons, and there are two types of axons:
    1)         Sensory axons (inputs) which carry messages from the skin, muscles, joints, internal organs and intestines to the central nervous system. These include sensations like touch, temperature, pain, muscle activity, and joint position.
    2)         Motor Axons (outputs) which control motion and carry signals from the central nervous systems to the body, limbs, internal organs and intestines.
    Inside the brain there are intermediate neurons which connect the sensory and motor neurons together.
    Messages are transferred from the axons by electrical pulses called action potentials. These electrical pulses travel from the sensory axons to the central nervous system where they activate the nerve cells and cause sensations.
    The longer axons (or wires) are insulated with the myelin sheath, which increases the speed at which a message can travel down the axon (or wire). Shorter axons do not have myelin insulators, and messages travel slower through them. It is the shorter axons that carry messages about touch, cold, warmth and pain. Because they are slower communication channels, a pain message from the foot can take about 1 second to reach the central nervous system (the spinal cord).
    A harmful sensation is simply an electrical pulse that is sent by the sensory axons to the central nervous system where it is interpreted as “pain”.
    Processing Pain
    Sensations are transmitted to the brain and include a lot more than just pain. The sense of balance is critical to being able to stand upright. Sensations such as hunger, thirst, swallowing, and the need to go to the bathroom are all critical. Some sensations are autonomous such as the heart beat and breathing.
    However, pain is the sensation that we are concerned with in this discussion. Pain usually is message sent to the brain that would indicate the body is being damaged and a response needs to be engaged. The sensory axons pass the message of discomfort to the central nervous system, where it is interpreted, and then a message is sent by the motor axons to respond, (i.e. move your hand away from the hot stove that is burning it).     This week on the PEMF-SHOW we will be discussing how Pusled Electro Magnetic Field Therapy (or PEMF) can help people suffering with diabetes. We will explore what causes diabetes, the symptoms people struggle with, and how PEMF can help alleviate both.
    The Diabetes Plague
    Diabetes is a growing problem worldwide. According to the World Health Organization, there were approximately 422 million people in 2013 who suffered from Diabetes. (1)
    Most people stumble across their diabetes due to symptoms that they begin experiencing. According to the Mayo Clinic (2) these include:

    Frequent urination.
    Excessive thirst.
    Increased hunger.
    Slow-healing sores or frequent infections

    Complications include

    Lack of interest and concentration.
    A tingling sensation or numbness in the hands or feet (neuropathy)
    Blurred vision.

    Personal battle
    This was certainly the case for me, waking from a deep sleep with “knives and axes” attacking my feet, never mind pins and needles!  At first, I thought something was biting me. After doing a thorough search of the bed, I realized the only other living being in it was my wife, so I started to look online. I quickly found that neuropathy (pain in the feet) is often due to diabetes. I was sure I didn’t have it until I read the list of symptoms and realized I had most of them.
    I went to my doctors and asked to be tested for diabetes. Diabetes is diagnosed based on the A1C which measure the amount of sugar in the blood.

    70-100 mg/dl (miligrams per decilitre) or 3.9-5.5 mmol/l (Millimoles Per Litre) is the normal range for blood sugar.
    101-125 mg/dl or 5.6-7.0 mmol/l is termed pre-diabetic
    over 125 mg/dl or 7.1 mmol/l is considered diabetic.

    My A1C blood level was measured at 175.68 mg/dl or 9.75 mmol/l. My doctor called me the next day and informed me I was classified as a Type 2 Diabetic.
    Understanding Sugar Metabolism
    It I worth taking a few minutes to understand how the body uses sugar. Sugar or glucose is the fuel that cells use for energy. It is metabolized by the body to produce ATP (adenosine tri-phosphate) which is the energy that powers the cells of the body.
    The glucose in our blood comes from two sources:

    The food that we eat
    The Liver (which creates and stores sugars)

    In order for the cells to metabolize glucose, (meaning to take it in and use it), they need insulin. Insulin is a chemical key that unlocks the cells and allows the sugars to enter. The pancreas is the organ in the body that creates insulin.
    When all these components function well together the body has a healthy metabolism. If the components of this system do not operate properly the result can be diabetes.
    Diabetes is the result of too much sugar or glucose in the blood.
    Types of Diabetes
    There are different reasons why too much sugar can be building up in the blood. The first is that the pancreas does not create enough insulin to unlock the cells to receive the sugars. This is termed Type 1 Diabetes.
    The second is when the cells become resistant to insulin, or the insulin cannot reach the cells due to too much fat coating the cells, not allowing the insulin to work and the sugar to be metabolized.  This is known as Type 2 Diabetes.
    In this case your pancreas works overtime to create more insulin. The insulin can be  blocked from unlocking the cells due to too much fat coating the cells and preventing insulin from being used and sugars from being metabolized. This creates a vicious cycle, because the body stores excess insulin in the visceral fat (or fat surrounding the organs). More insulin can result in more fat, and more fat can block the insulin from unlocking the cells.
    Causes of type 2 diabetes can be:

    Too much sugar or carbohydrates being consumed and overloading the system.
    Not enough exercise to use up the sugars and reduce the fat content in the body
    Being overweight (due to both of the above), but not necess

    The Earth’s Dynamo: Powering the Human Body
    Planet earth is a giant dynamo. Under the earth’s crust is an outer core which is made of molten metal. The outer core is heated by the inner core and is constantly in motion. Due to the rotation of the earth on a daily basis, the movement of magma is flows in cylindrical streams which create circulating electrical currents, which in turn generate the earth’s magnetic field. This magnetic field is easily detected by a hand-held compass whose needle is going to point to magnetic north.  This magnetic force has been found to be of great importance to the maintenance of human life.
    When NASA sent its astronauts to live in space for extended periods of time, they realized the reduction in exposure to the earth’s magnetic field had an adverse health effect.  One study, put out by the NASA’s Johnson Space Center, entitled “Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields – A Countermeasure for Bone Loss and Muscle Atrophy,” stated the following:
    Currently, there is a critical need to develop effective countermeasures for bone loss and muscle atrophy to enable future human space exploration to the moon, Mars and beyond. Progressive muscle atrophy can lead to weakness, fatigue, the inability to perform efficiently assigned tasks, and compromised emergency egress operations. Bone loss causes increased risk of bone fracture and kidney stones, which can also negatively affect mission objectives and success.
    To rectify this problem NASA researched the positive effects of PEMF.
    The purpose of these studies is to develop a pulsed electromagnetic field device for use as a noninvasive countermeasure to enhance bone retention, prevent or alleviate muscle atrophy, and augment natural healing/regeneration processes.
    This research represents a major contribution toward enabling humans to live and work safely in space, and is especially relevant to projected human space exploration. On Earth, this device could be useful in the treatment of various muscle diseases, age- and cancer-related muscle atrophy, osteoporosis, and other bone diseases.
    Some of the engineers involved in both the United States and Russian space programs concluded, if it was of benefit to the astronauts, it would also benefit you and I. But how exactly does PEMF work?
    The Electrical Human Body
    Human beings are electrical creatures. EEG tests (or Electroencephalog raphy) records electrical activity of the brain. EKG tests (or Electrocardiography)  records the electrical activity of the heart. When a person goes into cardiac arrest, a defibrillator is used to deliver a therapeutic dose of electrical energy to the heart to restart it.
