The Pledge Podcast explores political activism through short audio portraits. We call it The Pledge because it celebrates activism as a commitment to the hard work of democracy. Making this pledge means taking risks, speaking out, working hard and fighting day after day. It’s not easy, and success is often slow and never guaranteed. But making a commitment—a pledge—can motivate us to stay engaged for the long haul, which is the only way to truly make change.

Inspired by “the cafeteria lady”

Just listened to “Are You Afraid of the Cafeteria Lady.” Allison interviews a woman who has moved to the worst neighborhood in Birmingham as a way to free herself from the shackles of the white privilege system. Yes, she’s got two kids and a full-time job and she’s a single mom but she’s also a full-time change agent, emboldening others in her community.

Inspiring

This is a great podcast for anyone who feels frustrated by the news and feels helpless to change anything. It’s so inspiring and practical to hear from everyday people who have made a difference in their own communities. I finish every episode inspired and energized to take action. Allison, thanks for your great work on this.

Rally up!

I have been really inspired by The Pledge podcasts, and especially the one where you share Nancy Deabler’s story. As someone who lives in a place with many like-minded progressives, it feels easy to do the work. When I hear the story that Nancy shares and her commitment to the work, it is inspirational. Thank you Allison for sharing this and all the podcasts with us. I look forward to next season’s episodes.
