    FAST X : Fast-Ten Your Seatbelts - FRANCHISED

What do you know!? FRANCHI$ED is back (sort of)! Jonathan & Ariane return to the driver seat to get back to their roots with the franchise that started it all, The Fast Saga (are they still calling it that?). Of course, we are talking about the new instalment of the super spy car racing series, FAST X.
After going to space in the last film, you might wonder how the series could top itself? Well, we venture to the depths of the ocean to pluck out not one, but two Aquamen, add in even more new characters, blow up the Vatican, and just do a bunch of self-referential humour that basically lets everyone know, that you know, it's all a parody now. Oh, and you retcon your most beloved film in the series and start mysteriously bringing back more presumed dead characters.
Death doesn't matter. Gravity doesn't matter. It's all vroom, vroom, NOS, explosions and smooth brain! It's time to get FRANCHI$ED...
We just may be back for that long promised 3rd Season with the Twilight Franchise. If you want it, please do let us know...

    Unbreakable

    Unbreakable

In this bonus edition of The Pod Charles Cinecast, we see the next adventure in our two new side ventures – BRUCE WILLS US: A Pod Charles Cinecast Brucie Bonus, where we're going to be looking at some of our favourite films from Bruce Willis every once in a while on the main timeline, and SHYAMALAMANIA, where we will be charting the films of M. Night Shyamalan in special Patreon exclusives.
Like last time, because the M. Night film we're looking at this month, again, stars Bruno himself, we're going to combine these two ideas into one for a special episode that will hopeful entice more people to come support us over at patreon.com/ThePCCPodcast!
Join hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas, as they head back to Philadelphia to see about a former football player, who is the sole survivor of a train crash, and starts to realise he has never been sick, injured, and is pretty much invincible. No, it's not the 2006 Marky Mark football film, Invincible. It's the 2000 real-life superhero flick, UNBREAKABLE, starring Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson.
Following up for the massive success of Shyamalan's breakout film, The Sixth Sense, the studio wanted to market the film as another thriller. It's a shame, too, as Unbreakable is a unique look at the superhero and comic book genre in a time before it was commonplace. Unfortunately, the film struggled to get out of the shadow of its predecessor.
The film is loaded with some damn good ideas, great direction, with shots that look like they are pulled straight out of a comic book, and some memorable performances from Bruce Willis and Sam Jackson. There is also some clunky writing, bad acting, and another silly twist, with a pinch of Biblical references – all the ingredients for another M. Night classic.

Last Action Hero bombs the box office

Last Action Hero bombs the box office

This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, presented by The Prince Charles Cinema, our hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas head to New York City, where a kid gets his hands on a magical cinema ticket that allows him to jump into his favourite movies.
Just when we thought the Filaversary arc was over, and we could move on to some films about cinemas in film, we got pulled back in with the 1993 meta-action comedy, LAST ACTION HERO, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. So, we are getting meta with a new arc, called Fire in the Projection Booth, within an arc (the Filaversary 1993 arc), and showing this underrated box office bomb some love.
You have the writer of Lethal Weapon, the director of Die Hard, and the biggest action star on the planet all under one roof for this one. What could possibly go wrong? Well, how about a lot of rewrites, dumb promotional tactics, and Columbia thinking Arnie could take on the biggest movie of 1993 (and, for a few years, of all-time) by releasing the movie a week after Jurassic Park.
"To be or not to be? No to be..."

Jon and Fil are Chained for Life

Jon and Fil are Chained for Life

On this Bonus Edition of The Pod Charles Cinecast, hosts Jonathan Foster & Fil Freitas decided to make a movie about making a movie.
It all gets meta, as we talk about Aaron Schimberg's 2019 surrealistic drama, CHAINED FOR LIFE. Starring Jess Weixler and Under The Skin's Adam Pearson, the film takes you down the rabbit hole, as it follows a beautiful actress who develops a relationship with her co-star who suffers from a rare facial deformity. Along the way, you will be treated to a menagerie of characters on the film set, including a group of disabled people the "foreign" art house director has bussed in as a "freak show".
Strap in for a wild time, with this criminally under seen film that pokes fun at independent filmmaking, beauty standards in film, and the exploitation and representation of disabled people in film and media. Think Robert Altman meets David Lynch, as there are many twists and turns that await you – including our boy Jack, from Steven Spielberg's Hook, coming out of retirement for a role as the "German" Director.
Big thanks to our pal and Patreon Backer, Manish Agarwal, for making this Good Bagel Boss Bonus Episode request! Go out of your way to find this movie, as you won't regret it. It is truly a fun watch for fans of filmmaking, and has a great message to boot.
If you'd like your own special request episode, become a Good Bagel Boss on Patreon, for one month only, and pop us a message with the film you'd like us to cover! We'll eventually get around to it...

The lost cut of Mrs. Doubtfire

The lost cut of Mrs. Doubtfire

This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, presented by The Prince Charles Cinema, our hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas head to San Francisco, where a marriage has broken down, and the father is so desperate to see his kids, that he resorts to going full drag as the geriatric nanny to spend time with them. What could go wrong?
The final stop in the Filaversary arc (for now) takes us to the #2 top-earning film of 1993, with Chris Columbus' MRS. DOUBTFIRE, starring Robin Williams, Sally Field, the girl from Independence Day, Shawn Hunter's long-lost brother, and the real Matilda. You know the film; it's a family classic. It's one of Robin Williams' most memorable roles. Sure, it's got some problematic bits, and some weird choices on the soundtrack, and the whole thing probably wouldn't fly today. But, Robin Williams has just enough charisma to pull it off...
Join us, as we dive into the origins of the story, casting possibilities that probably aren't true, and the rumoured lost adult cut of Mrs. Doubtfire. Is there an NC-17 version of this film floating around? No, of course not! But, take a ride back in time with this silly 90s movie that showcases one of the best comedic talents of all-time at the top of their game!

The Fugitive and the cop who didn't care

The Fugitive and the cop who didn't care

This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, presented by The Prince Charles Cinema, our hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas stumble upon a game of cat and mouse, when a man who is wrongfully convicted of murdering his wife is being hunted down by a federal agent.
The Filaversary arc takes us to the #3 top-earning film of 1993, with THE FUGITIVE, starring Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones. With a tense story adapted from the 1960s television show of the same name, it has one of the best opening of any 90s thrillers, a solid little score, some great performances, and some memorable quotes.
Join us, as we dive into how this film came to be, and find ourselves falling down a couple of weird rabbit holes involving ghosts and killer doctors. How does this top dog of 93 hold up 30 years later? Tune in to find out...
