Hala Taha: From Tragedy to Triumph- The Story Behind her Journey

Hala Taha: From Tragedy to Triumph- The Story Behind her Journey

Hala Taha is the host of the #1 in Education, Young and Profiting Podcast, as well as the CEO of YAP Media, a full-service social media and podcast marketing agency. Hala started her career in radio production while in college at HOT97 on “The Angie Martinez Show.” Later, she launched an entertainment news blog site, “The Sorority of Hip Hop,” where she led an all-female team of 50 bloggers. When the blog site boom slowed down,

Hala took a temporary exit from the entertainment industry to get an MBA. She has 7 years of corporate marketing experience at HP and Disney Streaming Services. She started Young and Profiting Podcast and YAP Media as a side hustle, and now has several high-profile clients and over 40 employees.

    This Episode’s Heavy-hitters:

    - We go over the toughest of times from COVID-- the loss of Hala’s father, the end of a 12-year romantic relationship, and on a brighter note, leaving her corporate job to realize her dreams with YAP media.

    - Hala and I talk about the challenges of scaling a business that we’ve built with such a personal touch-- our success in scaling has been through passing that personal touch to our team members so that attention to detail and devotion is never lost.

    - Hala is starting a podcast network via YAP media where she’ll help produce, market, advertise and grow shows that she signs to the network.

    - Although she’s starting to hire more experienced C-level candidates, Hala promoted her VP of social directly from an internship program because she understood her brand and voice so well.

    - YAP Media grew so quickly during the pandemic that they actually had to turn down new clients for a couple of months just to make sure current clients were being properly taken care of.

BEST OF: Gary Vaynerchuk: The Story Behind Our Story – Self Awareness & Growth After Failure

BEST OF: Gary Vaynerchuk: The Story Behind Our Story – Self Awareness & Growth After Failure

Fans of #thePOZcast, this is one you have all been waiting for! Gary Vaynerchuk is the CEO of VaynerMedia, five-time New York Times best-selling author, and one of the most defining personalities in the world of entrepreneurship of our time. Gary also happens to hold the spot as one of the most significant catalysts in host Adam Posner’s life. Who, after he was fired from Vayner, led him in the direction of Recruiting and eventually founding NHP Talent and #thePOZcast.

This was a special, full-circle episode for the host Adam, and he hopes that those of you that have been fired in the past or have fallen on hard times can take Gary’s words and my progress since my days at Vayner 6 years ago to heart and use it as a motivation to harness your own inner tenacity to drive your life and career forward. Thanks Gary!

    This Episode’s Heavy-Hitters:

Gary’s POV on how others can find their own self-awareness.

Failure is not finite, especially in your career.

Gary “does not play the Glassdoor game.” especially around DEI&B and shares Vayner’s progress

Gary on tough decisions with his staffing: “I’m incredibly canderous as a public figure, but as an operator, delivering bad news to somebody’s face that I like… yeah, destroys me. It’s led to some of the weakest moments in my career of avoidance and having someone else do it.”

Being present with your family and loved ones outside of “work mode” is incredibly difficult. The only thing that makes it better over time is practice, practice, practice.

On managing anxiety: “Whether it’s your parents, older brother… you’ve gotta understand that until you feel like you’re 100% in control of your life… you will always be vulnerable to anxiety.”

Gary’s greatest piece of advice ever received from his dad around honesty.

Gary Vee’s North Star, find out by tuning in!

Randall Thompson & Kris Dehnert: Co-Founders @ Dugout Mugs

Randall Thompson & Kris Dehnert: Co-Founders @ Dugout Mugs

Randall and Kris are the cofounders of Dugout Mugs®, an officially licensed Major League Baseball bat-themed mug, and accessory company. Randall played in the minor leagues for the Toronto Blue Jays before getting cut from the team and deciding to launch his own company.

When he began to create the first Dugout Mug, he knew Kris was the perfect person to launch the business with. Prior to Dugout Mugs, Kris found success in numerous verticals, including real estate, apparel, hard goods, affiliate marketing, strategic partnerships, and more. His specialty is rooted in eCommerce and social media where he’s managed to surpass $40 million dollars in sales online.

Together, they’ve created the flagship brand that is Dugout Mugs, with products showcased by some of the most prestigious organizations in the baseball industry.

    This Episode’s Heavy-hitters:

    - Kris and Randall take pride in being themselves at all times. Whether it’s on the podcast, grabbing a beer, or speaking on stage, the company culture and brand is infused with their personalities through and through.

    - Randall first got the idea for the Dugout Mug when he was sitting in the dugout watching the hitting coach cutting baseball bats in half for a conditioning exercise. He took one look at them and decided that if you were able to bore out the middle of the bats, they would make great drinking vessels.

    - After getting fired from literally every job in his teens and early twenties, Kris truly started his career as a sales rep for Gold’s Gym. He did so well with early Facebook marketing (in 2011, before it was popular) and good old hand-to-hand sales that he ended up opening more locations for the chain owner.

    - Kris and Randall operate on the “Hell No or Hell Yes” system-- meaning that unless the answer to a business move or strategy is a “Hell No” off the bat, they treat it like a “Hell Yes” and go all-in on the opportunity.

    - At first, the MLB licensing wasn’t overly keen on granting Randall and Kris use of the official MLB name. Once they saw the sales numbers even without the branding, they were happy to grant full access.

Patrick Montgomery: From The Army to Wagyu: Founder @ KC Cattle Company

Patrick Montgomery: From The Army to Wagyu: Founder @ KC Cattle Company

Patrick Montgomery is a combat veteran and founder of the Kansas City Cattle Company, a veteran-owned and operated family business dedicated to producing the finest, USDA-certified hormone-free Wagyu beef. Patrick founded the company in honor of his brother-in-law, also a First Ranger Battalion member, who was killed in action in 2011. Patrick decided not to let the tragic loss become a crutch for inaction and destructive behavior, but rather to serve as motivation to build a dream-worthy of his memory.
With the beef shortages caused by the pandemic combined with the recent increase in education around Wagyu beef amongst the average consumer, Patrick and KCCC have hit the ground running with some of the best beef money can buy.

    This Episode’s Heavy-hitters:
    - After Patrick went back to school for Animal Science, he interviewed for a security consulting company. When he asked them what they did on the day-to-day and they answered “convince corporate we’re worth paying for” he knew the corporate world wasn’t for him and decided to start KC Cattle Company.
    - When he first started KCCC, Patrick had to spend a lot of time educating restaurants, consumers, and especially the banks granting him business loans what Wagyu beef was. Today, most people have at least heard of Wagyu and the market is exploding.
    - One of KCCC’s first huge breaks was when foodandwine.com published an article about their Wagyu hotdogs called “We Found a Hotdog That Tastes Like Steak”. At the time, they had 35 packs of hotdogs in stock, and overnight they had 7,500 orders placed.
    - After losing money on the first rush from that article and the surrounding press, KCCC gained over 15,000 loyal customers that would come back and continue to purchase their Wagyu products.
    - Patrick has adopted the philosophy to always try and take one thing away from everything he reads or listens to. For him, he hopes that people listening to this episode will think about pursuing entrepreneurship because he believes the world needs more entrepreneurs.

Adam is a great facilitator, moves conversations along with ease, and is never afraid to tackle the elephant in the room.
