Set in a lethal pro football league 700 years in the future, THE ROOKIE is a story that combines the intense gridiron action of “The Blindside” with the space opera style of “Star Wars” and the criminal underworld of “The Godfather.”
Aliens and humans alike play positions based on physiology, creating receivers that jump 25 feet into the air, linemen that bench-press 1,200 pounds, and linebackers that literally want to eat you. Organized crime runs every franchise, games are fixed and rival players are assassinated.
Follow the story of Quentin Barnes, a 19-year-old quarterback prodigy that has been raised all his life to hate, and kill, those aliens. Quentin must deal with his racism and learn to lead, or he’ll wind up just another stat in the column marked “killed on the field.”
Meet Quentin Barnes, star quarterback of the Purist Nation Football League. His talent has drawn the attention of scouts from around the galaxy. Who will wind up owning his contract?
Pro football players are a commodity, to be bought and sold. Quentin Barnes is no exception. Someone is about to buy his contract and give him a shot at his dreams.
A fear of flying is one thing, a fear of interstellar travel is another. The one problem with Quentin's goal of being the galaxy's best quarterback? He has to suffer through his ongoing fear that every punch-out will be his last.
Quentin prepares for his ordeal at The Combine, a former war prison that now screens GFL rookies. All prospective players are tested for body modifications and performance-enhancing drugs. Either one of these will earn you a death sentence in the Cretarakian Empire.
Quentin's ordeal at The Combine continues: the testing is over, but now he faces the "sub-races" face-to-face for the first time in his life. He has to deal with nine-foot-tall Sklorno receivers, thick Quyth Warrior linebackers, a team doctor that floats, and a 560-pound Ki defensive lineman whose goal for the season is to cripple Quentin.
Quentin arrives on The Touchback, the frigate that has been converted to the Kraken's team bus. He meets his competition for the starting spot, two-time GFL champion QB Don Pine, and perpetual bench-warmer Yhitzak Goldman.
I’ll be the first to admit I’m NOT a football (sports) fan.
Holy wow im definitely happy I gave this a try.
Mix GodFather, street fighter/mortal combat with Football and bam. Here we are.
The story is amazing, characters well rounded and the football was Even fun!
A truly and uniquely great series and first book
Sigler is writing what he knows - football. And using it as context for a bigger journey of growth, bigotry, and a man finding himself in a world much larger than he ever could have thought
There’s a ton of world building, but Sigler is able to work the exposition in through fun and engaging ways
Production is also stellar. Game sounds and excellent acting choices by the author who also reads it meant for a very immersive listening experience
