Safety Storytellers: Jason Trancho of Cintas
In this episode, Stacey is joined by Jason Trancho, Regional Safety and Health Manager at Cintas, which provides a range of products and services to businesses including uniforms, cleaning supplies, first aid and safety products, fire extinguishers, and safety courses.
Stacey and Jason discuss:
* How safety professionals can reach the hearts and minds of the people that you support safety.
* How safety is often subjective, especially when people’s risk levels are different for different people.
* Why it’s hard to get people to care about safety when they, to be blunt, don’t.
* Understanding people’s “why.”
* Why it’s important to learn the personal stories of people you, as a safety professional, are working with.
* Getting your safety point across to management and leadership by framing safety in terms of how much money reducing injuries will save them.
* How you can’t manage safety from behind a desk.

Safety Storytellers: Peter Susca of OpX Safety
In this episode, Stacey is joined by Peter Susca, who is a Principal for Operational Excellence LLC, which also is known as OpX Safety.
Stacey and Peter discuss:
* How Peter, as a kid, was into science and was kind of like the character of Penny Hofstadter from the sitcom Big Bang Theory.
* Peter’s view that the safety profession correlates to the betterment of human beings.
* How a CEO can change an organization’s stance toward safety much faster than a general safety professional can.
* How a CEO’s vision for safety sometimes gets diluted the further down it goes in an organization.
* Integrating safety into the value set of a business.
* How the way we fight fires has changed and how we have to play catch up.
* The process is where the risk lives. If you can understand the process, you can predict risk.

Safety Storytellers: Scott DeBow of Avetta
On this week’s episode, Stacey is joined by Scott DeBow, Principal HS&E expert at Avetta, a provider of supply chain risk management software.
Stacey and Scott discuss:
* How wonderful it would be if kids dreamed of entering into the safety profession when they grow up.
* How the safety industry is always a challenge.
* That safety should never be boring, yet it’s hard to make, say, compliance interesting at a human level.
* The following common safety assumption: “if we reduce the frequency of safety incidents, then we’ll also reduce the severity of safety incidents.”
* How people closest to the risk are the richest source of intel.
* Scott’s working title (which is very tongue-in-cheek!) for his next book is “I’m Sorry I Stuck My Finger In Your Eye, But It Was Necessary”! (You’ll have to listen to the whole podcast to get this one!)

Safety Storytellers: Justin Maynard of Onward Energy
On this week’s episode, Stacey is joined by Justin Maynard of Onward Energy.
Justin is a former firefighter and EMT who transitioned recently into the safety profession. In this episode, he discusses deciding to go back to school to learn about safety, even though he was in his mid-30s, worked a full-time job, and had a wife and two kids.
On his career change, Justin said: “It's never too late to do something new.”
He also experienced frustration and doubt about his choice. On his first day back at school, he thought, “What have I gotten myself into? This is horrible.”
Yet he stuck with it, graduated three years later, and is now at the beginning of his safety career with Onward Energy!
Thanks to Justin for being a guest on our show!

Safety Storytellers: Michael Circle of Onward Energy
In this episode, Stacey is joined by Michael Circle of Onward Energy, a power generator with a portfolio of solar, wind, and gas generation projects in the U.S.
Michael, who is both an Environmental Health and Safety Specialist and a PR Specialist, and Stacey explore the following in this episode:
* Michael initially decided to become a safety professional because he heard that safety was “lucrative.” But after he attended his first-ever OSHA class, he fell in love with safety.
* How even when we’re dealing with extremely serious topics — such as fall protection and electrical safety hazards — those of us in the safety profession can still find these topics exciting.
* Looking at safety as a combination of various other trades, including law, medicine, and enforcement.
* Michael’s dad lost a finger in a word accident.
* What excites Michael most about the safety profession today, which includes implementing the relatively new 24-foot rule for fixed ladders and ladder protection systems.
