The Seeing Eye is a philanthropic organization whose mission is to enhance the independence, dignity, and self-confidence of blind people through the use of Seeing Eye dogs. Based in Morristown, The Seeing Eye matches people throughout North America with the perfect dog for them. We got the chance to sit down with Brian McKenna and Melissa Allman to learn more about The Seeing Eye and to go on a blindfolded walk around Morristown!
Segment 1
Brian & Melissa describe their positions at The Seeing Eye and why they started working at the organization. Melissa is a graduate of the program, being matched with her dog Luna by The Seeing Eye five years ago, which had such a profound impact on her she decided to apply for a position. We also learned about the history of The Seeing Eye, dating back to 1927.
Today in New Jersey History: Jackie Robinson broke baseball's "color line" on April 18, 1946 at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City, New Jersey in an opening day game between the AAA minor league teams the Jersey City Giants and the Montreal Royals, who Robinson was playing for.
Segment 2
In perhaps the best segment of any episode we've done yet, Master Trainer Brian and Seeing Eye Dog Terry take Mike, who is blindfolded, on a walk around Morristown. Brian and Mike were mic'd up the entire time so while you won't exactly be able to feel what Terry is doing, you can hear everything Mike was hearing and get a sense for what the experience was like.
New Jersey Fun Fact: The most populated zip code is 08701, Lakewood, NJ with a population of 93,320. The least populated zip code is 08556, Rosemount, NJ with 13 inhabitants.
Segment 3
The Seeing Eye has cultivated a community that goes well beyond simply matching Seeing Eye Dogs with their person. Their relationship with Morristown, the lasting connections they make with the people who come through their program, their volunteers, and their donors are all important to the success of The Seeing Eye.
