Everything Is Stories
Created and produced by Mike Martinez and Tyler Wray, Everything is Stories is an ongoing survey of personal histories. Each episode is a first person narrative from someone who has lived through consequential changes to their notion of self and the world. Harry Crews said it best: “Nothing is allowed to die in a society of story telling people. It is all–the good and the bad–carted up and brought along from one generation to the next. And everything that is brought along is colored and shaped by those who bring it. These voices have told their greatest moments where peace is far and death is close. Sometimes these stories explore the philosophy of outsiders. But most importantly, these stories examine what it is to be human. We don’t record to defend or demonstrate an idea. Rather, we create a document of what was seen and felt during their transformative experiences. Take a listen. Start anywhere. You may find a new definition of reality’s highs and lows. Know of a story or storyteller? Send us your tales of genuine characters and unfamiliar places for consideration to: HQ@everythingisstories.com. No story too troubled, no atmosphere too strange, no realm too foreign.

I was so taken with the narrator’s weaving together of so many threads- the AIDS crisis, grappling with homosexuality, the pass given to adult predators, addiction, prison life- all in a way that is so relatable and somehow the best of who we can be shines through.

I just finished the extraordinary 3-episode story The Disorientation of Survival, which is everything podcast stories should be: insightful, inspiring, funny, emotional, and true. An amazing life story, well told and well produced. Highly recommend listening to the full 3 parts. More of this please.
Everything Is Stories/The Dissociation of Survival

Quite recently someone recommended the podcast series Everything is Stories to me as an antidote to my boredom with series television and a dearth of good movies. I have to say, the story telling in this podcast series so far is superb. I just listened to the latest one by Mark Olmsted titled The Disorientation of Survival. It’s in three parts and a very long, comprehensive tale, but well worth the time investment. Indeed waiting for the third episode to drop was excruciating. Don’t be put off by the scary warnings of graphic material. Parts ARE graphic but not gratuitous and never lurid. Olmsted’s journey is nothing short of miraculous and “survival” is both literal and complicated. His insight about his life is absolutely remarkable and it is rendered as a “story” in such a charmingly candid and self-aware manner that you feel an immediacy and affection for him both as the subject of his story and as the story’s narrator. You wish this guy lived next door. Hats off to the producers, too. With this much material it must have been no easy task to edit the story down to such a brilliant gem of prose. Not an extraneous word in the many hours of storytelling along with great subtle sfx that reminded me a little of old timey radio dramas. I will of course go back to Everything Is Stories now and become their most avid fan. Thank you. Amazing work.

I’m about halfway through part 1 of the podcast. Mark is such an excellent narrator/storyteller. I quickly got swept up in the narrative. The characters in his story/memoir are each so sensitively detailed..his older brother, his mother, his father, himself…they all just come alive in the telling. Everything is so vivid including the descriptions of how the specific times influenced him and his interactions with others. This is really excellent and needs to be published as a book.
