The Six Billion Dollar Gold Scam

It was the biggest gold discovery in history…until it wasn’t. In 1995, Canadian mining company Bre-X announced to the world it had found a significant amount of gold deep in the jungles of Indonesia. Stock prices soared as investors worldwide fought to stake their claim. But when Bre-X’s chief geologist mysteriously fell from a helicopter over the jungle, the story of the billion dollar discovery began to unravel. Nearly three decades later, no one has ever been held accountable. Now, host Suzanne Wilton takes listeners from the jungles of Indonesia to small town Alberta, Canada, to investigate what really happened and find out more about the man behind the biggest goldmine fraud of all time. Produced for the BBC World Service and CBC by BBC Scotland Productions. Please note, this series contains references to suicide and has some graphic content.

Is he still alive??

Great listen. Good story telling. But still not sure about the ending. Seems to have ended abruptly.
Enjoyed…

…but seriously want to know if this man is alive! The helicopter story made ZERO SENSE! I can’t believe authorities just accepted that! Well written, produced and told!
Loving this so far…only 10 minutes in!!

Just listen one episode at a time. It’s very well written and researched. A crazy moment in our time.
Don’t start what you can’t finish

From the narrator of “Sold a Story” comes the sequel “Can’t Finish a Story”. This was a really great podcast, right up until the climax and denouement turned out to be subscription only. Turns out de Guzman wasn’t the only guy scammin’.
Poor storytelling
06/16/2024
The plot moves slowly as the narrator’s voice has no character and just puts you to sleep. Didn’t believe this story could be so boringly told.
On the edge of my seat the whole time!

Such a good podcast. Well done and intriguing.
Good Story—Some Small Gaps in Research
06/05/2024
My main gripe is a pet peeve. The narrator mispronounced (badly) the name of one of the companies involved (Freeport McMoran). This is a US company that was involved in the story. It still exists and is active in mining. I feel confident that anyone involved at the time would have known the correct pronunciation. This suggests to me gaps in the research. But maybe it’s just a narrating error.
