184_Is the Carnivore Diet Right for You with Dr. Anthony Chaffee

184_Is the Carnivore Diet Right for You with Dr. Anthony Chaffee

Should you go carnivore? If you ask that question to my next guest on the Smart Nutrition Made Simple Show, the answer would be a resounding yes.
In today's podcast, I have the pleasure of chatting with my former rugby teammate turned neurosurgeon, Anthony Chaffee, MD. Dr. Chaffee is a fierce advocate of the carnivore diet and has completely eliminated all plant-based foods from his repertoire citing them as toxic and carcinogenic.
No fruits. No vegetables. No carbohydrates. No sugar. No artificial sweeteners. His diet consists entirely of meat and water, and he says he feels incredible.
In today's conversation, we talk about:
👉 What the carnivore diet is
👉 The ideology that "plants are trying to kill you"
    👉 Health benefits of a high-protein, high-fat, no-carb diet
👉 Assertions that carnivore is the best diet for optimal health and performance
👉Whether we need to be concerned with the carnivore diet from an LDL cholesterol standpoint
👉Types of diets most prevalent in the Blue Zones (areas where people have low rates of chronic disease and live the longest)
    👉 Grass-fed vs. grain-fed beef
👉 How to get started on a carnivore diet
Now, if you're familiar with me, you know that I am personally not a proponent of overly restrictive diets, particularly because they are really hard to stick with long-term. However, at BSL Nutrition we also believe that you need to develop the skills to become your own best nutrition detective, and for you that might be eating a high-fat, high-protein, low/no-carb carnivore-type diet.
I also want to be clear that it is my opinion that the carnivore diet is not necessarily any better than a plant-based diet or a paleo diet or a Whole30 diet. Every one of these types of eating methodologies facilitates weight loss, body composition change, and improved health by virtue of eliminating processed, sugar-laden foods, and replacing them with satiating, whole foods, ultimately resulting in a calorie deficit.

Badass Mom Breaks Her Struggles with Sugar and Alcohol to Reclaim Her Energy

Badass Mom Breaks Her Struggles with Sugar and Alcohol to Reclaim Her Energy

"I feel like a new person, like a different person than I was a year ago."
In this week's episode of the Smart Nutrition Made Simple Show, I have an open and honest conversation with badass mom and business owner Whitney T.
Before joining our Smart Nutrition Coaching Program, Whitney was at a breaking point. She felt like crap, was tired all the time, depressed, moody, and relied on alcohol and sweets to cope with the stressors of daily life.
In this podcast, we talk about Whitney's struggles with mental health, the steps she took to gain control and develop autonomy over her nutrition decisions, the realization that stress, sugar, snacking, and alcohol were her biggest limiting factors, the results she's experienced shifting from high-intensity exercise to progressive strength training, and the habits she created from our coaching program that will last her a lifetime.
As always, if you love what you hear on this show, then do me a favor and subscribe, leave a positive rating and review, and share this episode with a friend or loved one whom you think could benefit.
And, if Whitney's story resonates with you or if you're experiencing similar problems — have low energy, feel like you're in a bad place mentally or emotionally, or find yourself self-medicating with food or alcohol — and want to talk about working with me personally, I’d love to chat, just schedule your free nutrition strategy call at https://www.bslnutrition.com/free-strategy-call/.

The Importance of Strength Training for Fat Loss with BSL Nutrition Coach Dr. Dan Dodd

The Importance of Strength Training for Fat Loss with BSL Nutrition Coach Dr. Dan Dodd

One of the first tools that we tend to gravitate towards when we’ve committed to a weight loss program is some sort of cardiovascular exercise, like jogging, peloton, boot camp classes, and/or some sort of circuit-style training.
Many of us have this perception that if our heart rates are elevated, if we’re sweating, and we’re out of breath, then we’re burning more calories and therefore, burning more fat.
Unfortunately that’s simply not the case. Indeed, we may be burning more calories during that specific bout of exercise, but of more significance is how our body actually responds to the increase in calorie expenditure.
In today's Smart Nutrition Made Simple podcast, my buddy and BSL Nutrition Coach Dr. Dan Dodd and I thought it would be helpful to talk about the science behind why these types of cardio-intensive exercise routines are actually preventing us from losing weight, and why it's so important to shift our focus away from these types of workouts to progressive strength training.
In this conversation, we chat about the scientific research behind strength training, the importance of muscle mass for fat loss, longevity, and long-term health, the concepts of progressive overload and minimal effective dose when it comes to achieving weight loss and physique change, the misconceptions people have around strength training, and more. It's definitely a podcast you won't want to miss.
Dr. Dan is a wealth of knowledge and a fantastic resource for our BSL Nutrition team.

The Science of Self-Control with Menno Henselmans

The Science of Self-Control with Menno Henselmans

What if I told you that those that are the most successful with their weight loss goals are neither more disciplined nor have more self-control than anyone else, rather, they are more strategic about the situations that they put themselves into that actually require discipline and self-control.
Today I’m excited to welcome Menno Henselmans to The Smart Nutrition Made Simple Show. Menno is a scientific researcher, international public speaker, author of The Science of Self Control, and founder of the Henselmans Personal Training Certification Course.
    In this episode we discuss:
How should we be looking at self-control and willpower in the context of dieting and weight loss Intrinsic vs extrinsic motivation Rigid vs flexible dietary control and diet dogma The science of calorie cycling and diet breaks on long-term success As well as how the type and intensity of exercise factor into weight loss and body composition change
This was a great conversation on a myriad of nutrition, fitness, and behavioral psychology-related topics geared specifically to those looking to make lasting body composition changes and wanting the no BS, science-driven perspective.

Meal Planning Made Simple with Ben Brown and BSL coach Kim Schutt

Meal Planning Made Simple with Ben Brown and BSL coach Kim Schutt

I often come across clients who feel like they need to have these intricate meal plans, recipe guides, or they need to be putting together these seemingly complex dishes that are all extremely healthy.
And if they’re NOT doing any of these things then they’re not going to be making progress.
But that's not the case. And often times the more simplistic the better.
So in today's podcast, Coach Kim and I decided to have a candid conversation about some of the simple meal-planning strategies that she and I use, and that we share with clients, in order to help plan and prepare more effectively.
