Renewable energy and jobs – what prospects does the market offer?

Renewable energy and jobs – what prospects does the market offer?

Renewable energies are cost-effective, flexible and resilient and
they employ more and more people worldwide. This is the conclusion of
the latest study by IRENA (International Renewable Energy Agency), which
estimated that approximately 11.5 million jobs in the renewable sector
were created in 2019. Around the world politicians are calling for a
Green Deal - creating jobs while decarbonising our economies. And indeed
it does sound like a great plan: battling climate change while creating
jobs. But is the rise of renewables really connected to a substantial
increase in jobs? Michael Renner, Programs Officer at IRENA, tells us.

    Timeline:

2.45: What are the current figures?

5.32: About countries with the biggest potential

9.42: Which qualifications are currently in particular demand?

13.48: What is the specific situation in the sectors of energy storage and emobility?

What impact will sustainable batteries have on the market?

What impact will sustainable batteries have on the market?

Battery storage systems are a key flexibility option for the success of the energy transition. These technologies must meet a wide range of requirements, such as low costs and environmental impact. One challenge is to take a broader perspective on the sustainability of these technologies. What are the main areas of concern?  What are promising ways for the reduction of these concerns? And what about the role of the automotive industry?  We talk about this with Florian Mayr, Partner at Apricum, the Cleantech Advisory.

    Timeline:

1.48: What are the main areas of concern?

    5.25: About Battery cell manufacturing

    7.50: About Battery Recycling

10.30: What are promising ways of mitigation?

13.08: How is Europe positioning itself?

Agrivoltaics – synergistic production of food and energy

Agrivoltaics – synergistic production of food and energy

Agrivoltaics enables the simultaneous use of land for both agriculture and solar power plants. It thus offers opportunities for food and energy production and can also make valuable contributions to soil and plant conservation. This intelligent dual use of land for agriculture and solar power generation has the potential to counteract the shortage of farmland and contribute to the sustainable development of rural areas. Farmers are given the opportunity to develop new sources of income without losing the productivity of their land. But what are the current developments? And which areas are currently benefiting in particular? We talk about this with Max Trommsdorff, Group Leader for Agrivoltaics at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE.

    Timeline:

3.08: Differences to conventional ground-mounted PV or rooftop solar

6.08: About the advantages of Agrivoltaics

10.48: About the influence of climate boundary conditions

13.55: What are the current legal frameworks?

    Customers benefiting from flexibility?

    Customers benefiting from flexibility?

The generation of electricity from renewable energy sources is subject to various external influences. Digitalisation, new storage technologies and smart grids create more flexibility on the consumer side, thus providing the potential to even this out. What is the significance of flexibility in the new energy system? What solutions are there for networking it digitally and intelligently? And how can customers benefit? That's what we're talking about with Dr. Paul Troughton, Senior Director of Regulatory Affairs for Enel X as well as a member of SmartEn, the European business association integrating the consumer-driven solutions of the clean energy transition.

    Timeline:

02.33: What is flexibility in the context of the energy transition?05.55: What role can customers play in providing flexibility?07.50: What about storage?12.45: About demand-side flexibility in the electricity market as a lucrative business model
