    Turning Your Fever Dreams Into Something Real

    Turning Your Fever Dreams Into Something Real

    Neither Molly nor myself are immune to big dreams. In fact, we thrive on them. But sometimes those big dreams are more like fever dreams and have no basis in reality. In this week’s episode, we talk about a recent(ish) fever dream from late 2019 that we’re only just now turning into something real. More importantly, we’re sharing lessons we’ve learned and things we’re doing differently.

    In this episode:

    * We had a mutual big dream with unrealistic expectations.

    * And then we both stopped talking about it together.

    * When the time was right, we came back to it but in a more realistic way.

    * Start with a smaller goal rather than the finished product in mind.

    * Understand that these things happen in steps and stages and may take a long time to be fully realized.

    * Set deadlines by reverse engineering when we wanted to have a finished product.

    * Your vision is not a plan! (So sayeth Molly.)

    How to Be Trans Inclusive: A Conversation with Quinn Rhodes

    How to Be Trans Inclusive: A Conversation with Quinn Rhodes

    This week’s episode is a very special one, with Molly and I talking to Quinn Rhodes (ze/hir) about how smutlancers and content creators can be more inclusive of trans and non-binary people. This is an especially important conversation because of recent transphobic comments and behavior both within the sex blogging community and in the wider world (we’re looking at you, JK Rowling).

    If you are a cisgender person and wonder what you can do to be more inclusive, give this episode a listen. Quinn offers easy ideas and real-talk about what to do (and not do) when you misgender someone.

    In this episode:

    * Do not assume gender identity

    * Put your pronouns everywhere

    * Use they/them when you don’t know but once you know, use someone’s pronouns

    * When writing pronouns, it’s less acceptable to get it wrong than when speaking

    * Yes relearning is difficult but it’s not as difficult as living the experience

    * It’s not enough to say you’re inclusive, your actions have to back that up.

    * Retweet and amplify trans voices

    * Blogging about gender and bodies can be complicated but it’s possible to be more inclusive

    Note: The day before this episode was recorded, the backlash against this blog post lead to trans and non-binary sex bloggers being called fascists and more.

    Traffic Ups and Downs

    Traffic Ups and Downs

    Looking at your website stats recently and feeling bummed that traffic is down? That dip might have nothing to do with your site or your content. In this episode, Molly discusses seasonal traffic spikes and dips and also how traffic flow can change due to things that are completely out of your control.

    In this episode:

    * Your site traffic can drop even when you’re doing everything “right”

    * Two times of the year when traffic may drop

    * Google algorithm updates are out of your control

    A Professional to the End

    A Professional to the End

    I have no idea how to explain this week’s podcast. Basically, I became very anxious about telling a client I could no longer work with them, overprepared, lost sleep, and made the “perfect” plan. I forgot that a plan means nothing if the other person reacts differently than you expect them to react. Ultimately, my goal in this situation was to be a professional until the very end.

    In this episode:

    * Black Lives Matter. Racism and police brutality must come to an end. Links to some resources to learn more below.

    * In a couple of episodes, I’ve talked about endings and feeling muddled.

    * Recently I took action and ended a working relationship with a client.

    * I made a plan and executed it.

    * But I didn’t get the outcome I expected.

    * Ultimately, behaving like a professional is the best course of action — most of the time.

    Smutlancers Q&A: June 2020 Mailbag

    Smutlancers Q&A: June 2020 Mailbag

    In this month’s mailbag episode, we tried “rapid-fire” answers again and probably need to admit defeat on that one. There’s always more to share! This month, we answered questions on raising your rates, feeling guilty for your income, and using editorial calendars.

    In this episode:

    * Dealing with guilt

    * Using editorial calendars

    * Raising rates with an established client

    On Starting and Stopping Projects

    On Starting and Stopping Projects

    I haven’t met a smutlancer yet that wasn’t filled with ideas — and doubts about how to execute them. After last week’s episode, Molly and I sat down to discuss how we approach starting new things AND deciding when to stop ongoing projects. Tl, dr: It’s complicated.

    Strap in for this week’s episode as we talked for a while!

    In this episode:

    * A quick celebration of buying a new house with smutlancer income

    * Thinking about new projects and ideas

    * Deciding if we should start them and how

    * Putting projects on pause

    * Ending projects completely

Helpful and easy-to-digest information

Kayla's doing great work with this podcast. She gives lots of information from experience that's easy to put to use. Her advice serves to not only helpful individuals thrive, but the community as well. The episodes are a good length that allow adequate information without going far off-topic or being too overwhelming.

If you're a writer, you're going to benefit

The Smutlancer is a podcast I actively look for each week because of the content. It is useful and relevant whether you're a sex-blogger or not. If you write and put your writing into the wierd, tangled world of the internet with some hope of monetizing, Kayla brings real-world, down to earth, doable advice and lays it on the table for you. The episodes aren't long, so its easy to listen while commuting or waiting for that next idea to smack you upside the head. Give it a listen. You won't be disappointed.
