Episode 85: Laura Dunn Talks Title IX and How It Applies to K-12

Episode 85: Laura Dunn Talks Title IX and How It Applies to K-12

Guest Laura Dunn talks about Title IX and how it applies to schools for K-12. Most people only think of Title IX as applying to colleges, but this is completely false. Laura L. Dunn is a nationally recognized expert on Title IX and campus sexual assault available for expert witness and consultation services on lawsuits, policies, trainings, and other projects. She is also an experienced litigator and victims' rights attorney who represents victims of sexual violence and harassment, as well as campus safety whistleblowers. Her website can be found here: http://www.lldunnlaw.com/

In this episode, Laura discusses how Title IX applies to schools for grades K-12, and how abuse--whether from peers or teachers--must be remedied when a complaint is filed.

Episode 84: The Cost of Being Abused

Episode 84: The Cost of Being Abused

This is part of a series on abuse in schools. Abuse statistics are increasing with teacher/student abuse. In this episode, we discuss the cost of being abused. The CDC did a study in 2012 that shows the estimated cost that follows a victim of abuse throughout their life. This is only one of many reasons why we fight so hard to keep known abusers away from children.

Episode 83: Abuse In Schools and Troubling Stats

Episode 83: Abuse In Schools and Troubling Stats

Several years ago, a study showed that 3.5 million 8-12th graders in the US report being sexually touched by an adult. Most of those adults are teachers. If we include adults who show pornography, exchange photos, or m********e in front of students, that number jumps to 4.5 million. There is a very big problem in our schools, and it has not gotten any better. This episode begins a series on abuse in schools and what we can do about it.

Triggers

Thanks so much for the “triggers” episode. It was exactly what my heart needed to hear today. I’ve been beating myself up for being so triggered in specific environments. My thought process has been “if I really trusted God, I would not be so triggered all the time.” Wow. Just typing that now, I realize how messed up that way of thinking is. Thanks for reframing this for me!

You are being used by God

I reported my father to the police who had sexually abused his own children. You gave me the courage and understanding to take this step. God bless your talks on this podcast. You don’t know how healing they are.

So much detailed information!

This podcast is a goldmine. It’s so encouraging to hear how much Jimmy and Clara care about this issue and how they’re not afraid to call evil “evil” or to support people who aren’t “safe survivors” (i.e. practicing, conservative, Republican Christians with a happy ending to their story).

After countless negative experiences with church people who support my rapist, I was very relieved to find this podcast and its passionate, caring cohosts. My only regret is that I’ve listened to all the episodes already, so now I have to wait for new ones!
