EP91: How Are We using Spreadsheets in the Classroom?

In Episode 91 of The Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav talk about the ways in which they have been using spreadsheets, more specifically Google Sheets, to document student progress and monitoring goals. The presentation of a unique circumstance this past year and a half has forced educators to alter their practice, and this is one way that Chey and Pav have evolved their practice to encompass the use of spreadsheets. In this way, feedback and assessment in the virtual space, but also in the physical space, have become very prominent. The dynamic duo highlights that spreadsheets offer them with flow, organization and an opportunity to monitor the advancement of explicit learning skills that have been taught in class!

EP90: How Do We Talk About Racism and Oppression with Students?

In Episode 90 of The Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav talk about the importance of talking to students about racism and oppression, and offer strategies on how to introduce some of the heavy topics and conversations. Chey and Pav discuss the ways in which we can do this in a way that isn't reactive or performative, and makes an impact with students. They discuss ways in which educators can honour and celebrate the identities of students, and keep the conversations local and as close to the community as possible. We must also attempt to embed the conversation everywhere we can within the curriculum and school environment, always coming at the conversation with an asset lens, and not a deficit.

EP88: Is Learning Loss Something We Need To Worry About?

EP88: Is Learning Loss Something We Need To Worry About?

In Episode 88 of The Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav talk about a concept known as "Learning Loss," and whether it should be something of concern for teachers as we emerge from Covid 19. There have been many conversations regarding Learning Loss for years, as it has traditionally been a topic of conversation for summer vacations, however, it has become significantly heightened as we come out of 18+ months of "disrupted" learning.

Chey and Pav refer back to their first exposure to this idea a few months ago through a blog post written and shared by Sunil Singh @Mathgarden. It was through this learning that they began to consider the story behind Learning Loss and how it affects students and teachers in educational systems.
