3 episodes

This is a three-part series about the Bo-Kaap and gentrification. It reflects on the history, present and potential future of the iconic neighbourhood and the changes and challenges it is facing.

It looks at the history and founding of Bo-Kaap and how it was affected during apartheid. It tracks the changes to the historical businesses in the area and the new ones that are opening and it considers what should guide the development of the area. It covers the controversy of the current developments but also those of its history.

It aims to provide both the real story of the well-known suburb and serve as a resource to inform the debate about its future and the balance to protect heritage while enabling development.

The story of Bo-Kaap is an EWN production presented and produced by Haji Mohamed Dawjee and Rebecca Davis with sound engineering and editing by Gavin Deysel. Our thanks to Beat Bangaz featuring Youngsta CPT for the use of the song Bo-Kaap.

Protecting the past and preparing for the future

Protecting the past and preparing for the future

Episode 3 - Residents of Bo-Kaap took to the streets to protest the planned developments in early 2019. The City, heritage authorities, developers and the community faced off in court battles to determine who should decide the future of this iconic neighbourhood.

Adding to the complexity are climbing property prices; residents face the difficult decision to sell or stay.

Finding a lasting solution for the Bo-Kaap may be the blueprint for how to deal with other neighbourhoods facing gentrification.

    The business of Bo-Kaap

    The business of Bo-Kaap

Episode 2 - Bo-Kaap is not just a residential neighbourhood but a commercial one. Famed for the artisans, craftsmen and shop keepers it has been an entrepreneuring hub in the city for centuries.

Doing business though was complicated and as it modernises it is no less complicated to maintain the balance of the past while serving the needs of a developing City.

    A long and surprising history

    A long and surprising history

Episode 1 - The Bo-Kaap is a popular tourist destination in Cape Town with a rich history that is widely shared with visitors.

It survived Apartheid when other neighbourhoods in the City centre saw their black residents moved to outlying suburbs, but how that happened illustrates how manipulative the Apartheid system was.
