110: TTU | Matt Chandler Steps Back, Augmented Reality, & Manufactured Spirituality

110: TTU | Matt Chandler Steps Back, Augmented Reality, & Manufactured Spirituality

We're back tossing it up with some new topics! This episode we talk about Matt Chandler's announcement about stepping back from ministry because of a (allegedly non-sexual, non-romantic) relationship with a woman and what that says about the state of many modern American churches. We also look toward the future and how augmented reality may affect how we relate with one another and even how we do spiritual formation. Finally, we look at how churches do and should function in regards to their affects on individuals and communities.

If you have any thoughts on these topics or suggestions for future topics or guests, send us an email or a voicemail!

109: Substance Reflects | Homelessness feat. Kevin M. Nye

109: Substance Reflects | Homelessness feat. Kevin M. Nye

Homelessness is a serious and complex problem around the world and at home. It's also a problem that we have some powerful solutions available to us. This week we reflect on the topic with seminary graduate, homelessness advocate, and recently published author Kevin M. Nye. His new book Grace Can Lead Us Home: A Christian Call To End Homelessness is now available to buy and read and the final sentence in it's Amazon description is: "This thorough and intimate book shows us that from the margins, Jesus has something to teach us all about grace--something that could change the landscape of homelessness entirely if we're ready to hear it."

We hope this is eye-opening, challenging, and ultimately encouraging as we all seek to think and live more like Christ in how we see and love those around us who are experiencing difficulties!

108: Substantive Cinema | Everything Everywhere All at Once feat. Jason & Hannah Chao

108: Substantive Cinema | Everything Everywhere All at Once feat. Jason & Hannah Chao

We've covered a lot of great movies on the podcast before (see list below), but we may have never been more on the same page as this one. Everything Everywhere All at Once is a funny, action-packed, mind-bending film that deals with multiverse theory and features several alternate universe versions of its protagonists, but at its heart it's ultimately a story about a multigenerational family learning to live with and love each other.

Joining us to discuss this film is returning guest and SOLA Network editor, Hannah Chao and her husband, filmmaker Jason Chao. We so our best to cover both the universal and specific themes in the film and talk: intergenerational relations, social media overwhelm and its inherent dangers, the Asian American immigrant experience, and the power of empathy & kindness. It was an absolute pleasure and we hope you enjoy it!

107: TTU | Thankfulness, Embracing "Christian Nationalism," & Prov 26:4-5 on Social Media

Yes, it's been since early April since we've put out a TTU episode, but we've got a great one for you here! Topics covered on this episode include: the importance of thankfulness in the Christian life, the recent development in some church circles to proudly embrace the label "Christian Nationalist" along with its tenets, and how Proverbs 26:4-5 (4 Do not answer a fool according to his folly, or you yourself will be just like him. 5 Answer a fool according to his folly, or he will be wise in his own eyes.) applies to our interactions on social media.

If you have any suggestions for future topics, be sure to send us an email or voicemail!

    106: Reflects | Roe v Wade Overturned

    106: Reflects | Roe v Wade Overturned

Overturning the United States Supreme Court ruling on Roe v. Wade has been something that anti-abortion folks have had their sights set on for years and recently, they seem to have got their way. On a previous Reflects show on abortion, we discussed aspects of why this was a goal and some potential issues with it but now it's a reality and the conversation is a lot more sobering.

We know that this issue is complex and none of us are legal experts (or women) but we hope that we're able to start the part of this conversation in a post-Roe world in a biblical, thoughtful, and human manner and we'd love for you to join us! Send us an email, DM, voicemail and join the discussion.

    105: Substantive Cinema | Us (2019)

    105: Substantive Cinema | Us (2019)

We realize it's been since April that we did our last Substantive Cinema (a great show with Tyler Huckabee that you should all listen to and share with others if you haven't yet!), the perils of pivoting release schedules but we're back on track with an excellent one!

Jordan Peele's 2017 directorial debut Get Out was a smash commercial and critical success (and we had Eugene Park on to discuss that back on Ep #62, link is below). Anticipation and expectations were high for his follow up two years later, and though his next effort, Us, released to very mixed reactions, there's an abundance of substance there and we had a great time revisiting it as we look forward to his next movie, Nope, releasing this coming weekend!

Give it a listen and send us an email or a voicemail and let us know what you thought of the film and our takeaways. And let us know if there's someone you think we should reach out to for inevitable SC episode on Nope!

Great sound quality!

I want to commend this podcast for their superb sound quality and desire to talk about God! I admit I haven't listened to all the episodes, so sometimes I am wary to recommend something when I haven't heard all the view points, so of course in everything you listeners consumer (including this pod) use prayer and discernment. I pray you all at The Substance godly success and His guidance!

Refreshing & well balanced

This a well balance podcast that talks about every single topic and it doesn’t have a specific theme which is refreshing. The podcast core is coming from a Christian point of view but it is not preachy. The hosts (Vincent, Trevor, & Phillip) have great chemistry & they don’t talk over each other. Sound quality is great and the podcast is well produced so you don’t get distracted from the topic by subpar sound quality and background noises. You also hear different point of views from the hosts so they don’t agree all the time. Each episode is a little over an hour or longer and it goes pretty fast. I’m happy to have found this podcast and it will be part of my podcast shows rotation going forward.

Adds value to my life, feels friendly

I have really been enjoying The Substance Podcast! As a stay-at-home-mom I don’t always make the time to read a ton of books, so this podcast is a great way to get encouraged and educated. I learn something every episode! These guys have a great presence that doesn’t feel stuffy or pretentious. I often find myself smiling along with them. Thanks Trevor, Phillip and Vince!
