    831: Make Bold Decisions With Daphne Kwok

    Daphne Kwok is a champion for the AAPI community.  In July 2013, Daphne Kwok was appointed as the Vice President, of AARP’s Multicultural Markets and Engagement. Daphne leads the AARP’s outreach to Asian Americans 50+.  Daphne Kwok was appointed by President Barack Obama in July 2010 to serve as Chair of President Obama’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. She has also served as the Executive Director of Asians & Pacific Islanders with Disabilities of California (APIDC) for the last 5 years.  Daphne has fought to break down the stigma in the AAPI community about disabilities and to provide technical assistance to organizations that want to effectively work with AAPIs with disabilities.  Prior to her tenure at APIDC, Ms. Kwok served as the Executive Director of the Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation (AIISF) in San Francisco from 2005-2007. Daphne is also a former Executive Director of the Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies (APAICS), where she focused on increasing political participation of the APIA community and working with API elected officials from school board members to Members of Congress. Prior to her services at APAICS, Daphne served for 11 years as Executive Director of the Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA), a non-profit, civil rights organization with more than 10,000 members.  A graduate of Wesleyan University in East Asian Studies and Music, Daphne is the first Asian American to serve on its Board of Trustees.

    Daphne shares her story about growing up in America during the 1970s and how having the courage to make bold decisions gave her the confidence to start and continue her work to help the advancement of the AAPI community.

    Sue Ann Hong is the President and CEO of Center for Asian Pacific American Women (CAPAW).  Her career was with State Farm Insurance Companies for over 28 years, including Data Processing, Diversity & Inclusion, Corporate Business & Technology Portfolio Management and P&C Auto Claims. She’s led up to 600 employees in multiple locations, managed 1000 contract employees and supported customers and State Farm agents in 23 states.  She’s worked in various locations, including MI, IL, NY and GA.  She infuses the philosophy of building trusting relationships, collaborating and bringing people together to achieve common goals. A 2002 Asian Pacific American Leadership Institute (APAWLI) Fellow, she continues her journey as a Whole Person Leader in her belief it’s the journey versus the destination. Her goal is to support CAPAW’s vision to build Whole Person Leaders one person at a time. 

    Sue Ann shares how she builds her confidence by learning to take it one step at a time in every part of her life whether it's business or life.  She also shares the current stats of #StopAsianHate and why it's important to bring awareness to what is happening to our community.

    Shanaia Gomez is an actress, TV commercial model and singer.  She is also one of the five newest talents of Rise Artists Studio, a unit of ABS-CBN’s Star Magic.  Born in Ireland and raised in Canada, Shanaia got her first big break when she landed her first TV commercial in the Philippines.  Since then, Shanaia has starred in many TV commercials for some of the biggest brands in the Philippines and has expanded her career into acting, hosting and singing.  One of her missions is to spread positivity and good vibes as much as possible.  Shanaia has also been featured in METRO Magazine, Manila Bulletin and more.

    Shanaia talks about how she used to measure her self worth from social media and how that made her go into a dark place in her life at one point.  She also shares how letting go of toxic people in her life gave her the freedom to show up as her authentic self.
