Hannay, still disguised as Turnbull, finds that several policemen are searching for him, so he decides to escape across the countryside.

Hannay reaches an old man's house and the man tells him to hide inside. He seems friendly but Hannay is worried as to why this bald archaeologist seems only to willing to help him evade the police.
