The Town Mile Podcast was created by Joe Janssen in July of 2017 and is a home for all things ball, rock and roll, small town anecdotes, big city anecdotes, and everything in between. Matt Scioli jumped on board shortly after the inception, and has truly been a perfect addition. The name comes from Hall Of Fame Coach Jeff Vanleur’s ability to get young kids to run hard on paved roads. Most notably Tony Klock: who in 1994 won the gold medal state title in the 300 hurdles, despite not having a track to train on. Track practice consisted of running through town: town miles. This is The Town Mile.

The VanLeur Chronicles series continues after a few month hiatus, with Gerad VanLeur. Gerad shares his experiences of growing up and being around his Dad's incredible coaching career; and how it continues to impact him to this day. He also shares his memories of his stellar hoops prowess, which led to a memorable career at the University of Sioux Falls. Huge thank you to Gerad for carving out some time to join, and huge thank you for hitting play!

#53 Jeff VanLeur
There wouldn't be a VanLeur Chronicles series without him. In this episode, I had the privilege of sitting down with South Dakota Hall of Fame Coach VanLeur to go over his remarkable coaching career in Emery. We talk about the milestones of his 40+ year career: from the early years in the 80's, to the '93 team that made the first playoff run; and the first title team in 2001. Was a pleasure to talk to Coach, thanks for listening.

Happy Father's Day to all the Dads out there! Especially to my Dad, Terry Janssen. I sat down with my Dad on a recent trip home to discuss his formative years growing up in Emery, and when basketball and baseball first became a thing in his life. Very proud to get to hear my Dad's story of incredible resilience, and share it on The Town Mile. Thanks for listening.

#51 Tony Klock
The VanLeur Chronicles series continues with Tony Klock. Tony was at the forefront of Emery teams that broke the mold in 1993/'94 and made the State Championship in both football and basketball. Remarkably, Tony was the 300m Hurdles Champion in all classes in South Dakota: without a track to practice on. Simply put, there is no Town Mile without Tony Klock.

#50: Mike Henriksen
Longtime South Dakota media mogul Mike Henriksen joins the Town Mile Podcast for the 4th installment of the VanLeur Chronicles series. Mike is South Dakota broadcasting royalty, who takes us through his media journey from growing up in Nebraska. Many of us grew up in the late 80's with his voice on KELOAM 1320 in the mornings as part of Chad & Mike for many years. He gives us great stories of memorable games he covered, his short list of best players he saw; and gives tremendous props to Coach VanLeur. Thanks for listening!

Sublime podcast. The bravado and gusto brought by this dynamic duo is second to none. Since the transcendent recording artist Kenneth Michael Loggins, I haven’t listened to a more supreme sound! Bravo!
