Episode 36: How Women Lose Themselves Without Realizing It

How does a woman get so far away from herself without even realizing it? It rarely happens all at once. It can happen slowly, through years of taking care of other people, saying yes when you want to say no, ignoring what your body is telling you, keeping the peace, meeting expectations, and becoming really good at being who everyone else needs you to be. Until one day, you realize you’re not entirely sure what you need anymore. In this episode, Janell sits down with Angela Obert, business development expert and owner of Network Connection Minnesota, for a deeply personal conversation about people-pleasing, codependency, self-abandonment, identity, and what it takes to rebuild a relationship with yourself. Angela shares openly about her own experience with codependency and how she began recognizing the ways she had changed or abandoned parts of herself to please, help, or fix others. She and Janell also explore why “doing the work” doesn’t mean old patterns disappear, and how transformation can look less like eliminating those parts of yourself and more like changing your relationship with them. They talk about: How people-pleasing can become self-abandonmentWhy old patterns can still show up after years of personal growthWhat rebuilding self-trust actually looks likeWhy keeping small promises to yourself mattersThe difference between consistency and perfectionHow the nervous system can keep familiar identities and patterns in placeLearning to listen to the signals your body is sendingWhy uncomfortable emotions, including anger, need space to be feltHow to begin separating what you genuinely want from what you’ve been conditioned to wantWhy being physically “in the room” can create something another podcast, book, or program simply can’t Ultimately, so much of this conversation comes back to one thing: The relationship you have with yourself. And perhaps coming back to yourself isn’t about reinventing who you are. It’s about remembering. 🌿 Remember Me: A Day to Come Back to YourselfOn October 2, Janell and Angela are continuing this conversation in person with Remember Me, an intimate, full-day retreat for women at The Nest Retreat in Vadnais Heights, Minnesota. It’s a day to step outside the noise and responsibilities of everyday life, reconnect with your body and your own voice, and explore who you are in this season of your life. Episode 35: Why There Isn't One Thing That's Going to Fix You

What's the one thing I need to do to finally feel better? It's one of the most common questions Janell hears from women who have been struggling with fatigue, hormone changes, digestive issues, weight concerns, poor sleep, or simply feeling like they don't recognize their body anymore. The desire for one clear answer is understandable. When you've spent years trying different diets, supplements, practitioners, and protocols, the promise of a single solution feels hopeful. But what if healing doesn't work that way? In this episode, Janell explains why lasting healing isn't about finding one magic fix—it's about understanding the whole person. Your body isn't a collection of disconnected symptoms. Your hormones, metabolism, digestion, blood sugar, nervous system, emotions, relationships, environment, and life experiences all influence one another. When we begin looking for patterns instead of isolated problems, the picture becomes much clearer. In this episode, Janell discusses: Why searching for "the one thing" can keep you stuck in the healing hustleHow seemingly unrelated symptoms are often connectedThe difference between symptom-focused care and whole-person healingWhy more information doesn't always create more clarityHow understanding patterns leads to better decisionsWhy you're not broken—and why that's one of the most freeing realizations in the healing journey If you've ever felt overwhelmed by conflicting advice or exhausted from trying one solution after another, this episode offers a calmer, more integrated way to think about your health. Episode 34: Why Eating Healthy Isn't Helping You Feel Better

You're eating more protein. Choosing healthier foods. Cutting back on sugar. Trying to do everything "right." So why don't you feel better? In this episode, Janell explores one of the biggest misconceptions in nutrition: that healthy eating is simply about choosing healthy foods. While food quality absolutely matters, it's only one part of the equation. Your body also needs enough nourishment, appropriate meal timing, healthy digestion, balanced blood sugar, and an eating pattern that supports your current season of life. A meal that works beautifully for one person may not be the right fit for someone else—and even healthy foods can't overcome chronic under-fueling, constant stress, or a nervous system that's stuck in survival mode. In this episode, Janell discusses: Why healthy foods don't automatically create healthy outcomesThe difference between healthy foods and a supportive eating patternHow under-eating can contribute to fatigue, cravings, weight plateaus, and poor recoveryWhy meal timing matters just as much as food qualityThe connection between stress, digestion, and nutrient absorptionHow fear of food and restrictive eating patterns can quietly undermine your healthWhy context—not food labels—should guide your nutrition decisionsIf you've been frustrated because you're eating "healthy" but still don't feel like yourself, this episode offers a more complete way to understand what your body may actually need. Episode 33: Why You're Exhausted... But Still Can't Sleep

You finally crawl into bed after a long day, completely exhausted... And suddenly, you're wide awake. Or maybe you fall asleep easily, only to wake up at 2 or 3 a.m. and struggle to get back to sleep. If that sounds familiar, you're not alone—and hormones may be only one piece of the puzzle. In this episode, Janell explores why sleep challenges in midlife are often much more complex than we've been led to believe. While changing hormones can certainly influence sleep, your nervous system, blood sugar, digestion, daily rhythms, stress, and even unresolved emotions all play an important role in how well your body rests and recovers. In this episode, Janell discusses: Why being tired doesn't automatically mean your body is ready for sleepHow your nervous system can keep you awake long after the day is overThe connection between blood sugar and waking during the nightWhy meal timing and digestion influence sleep qualityWhat waking between 1–3 a.m. or 3–5 a.m. may indicateWhy sleep supplements don't always solve the problemSimple changes that can support deeper, more restorative sleep If you've been trying all the usual sleep advice but still wake up feeling exhausted, this episode will help you understand the bigger picture and begin looking for patterns instead of quick fixes. Episode 29: Why You Still Feel Stressed Even When the Problem Is Gone

Have you ever solved the problem… but your body still felt stressed? The difficult conversation is over. The deadline has passed. The kids are finally asleep. And yet… You're still anxious. Still tense. Still reaching for food. Still can't seem to relax. If you've ever wondered why that happens, this episode is for you. In this conversation, Janell introduces one of the most important concepts in nervous system healing: the stress cycle. While most of us have been taught how to manage stressors, very few of us have learned how to help our body recover from stress itself. You'll learn the difference between external stressors and your body's biological stress response, why emotional eating is often about nervous system regulation rather than willpower, and practical ways to help your body recognize that the danger has passed. In this episode, Janell discusses: The difference between stressors and stressWhy your body can stay stuck in survival mode long after the problem is overHow emotional eating can become a strategy for regulating your nervous systemThe fight, flight, and freeze responsesWhy completing the stress cycle matters for healingSimple practices that help your body return to safetyWhy healing isn't about eliminating stress—it's about increasing your capacity to move through it This episode continues the conversation from recent episodes exploring the nervous system, mind-body connection, and somatic healing.
