Welcome to the un-cult-ured podcast!

Were you forbidden to watch “Harry Potter” as a kid?
Did you think AC/DC stood for “anti-Christ Devil Cult”?
Have you ever uttered the phrase, “I’m sorry but my conscience doesn’t permit me to do that”?
Then you’ve come to the right place!

We are four former Jehovah’s Witnesses that have decided to fully embrace pop culture. There is a plethora of content out there geared towards former Jehovah’s Witnesses. In the process of leaving the religion, it is very helpful to do as much research as absolutely possible to become thoroughly convinced that the religion does not have “the truth”…

But where do you go after that? What happens when you no longer need to be convinced that Jehovah’s Witnesses do not have the truth, but you still would like to have a foot in the community of former Jehovah’s Witnesses? That’s where we come in!

The podcast is geared towards anyone who had a strict religious upbringing and is just beginning to explore their freedom to watch any movies, play any games, or read any books that they want to without fear of reprisal.

    Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice Review

    Hello and welcome to UnCultured!
Video games are an interesting form of art. When they were first introduced, they usually consisted of dots and squares moving on a tiny screen. Today, video games are one of the best vehicles for telling stories, allowing players to immerse themselves in the experience more so than almost any other medium.
Today, Covert Fade and Jordan will be discussing a video game that made both of them cry: Hellblade Senua’s Sacrifice.

    Pop Culture Pick Me Ups

    Pop Culture Pick Me Ups

    Hello and welcome to UnCultured!
Pick me ups can take many forms. In video games, they can restore characters from the dead or cure status ailments. In real life, it can be a cup of tea, a coffee, a gin and tonic, or whatever else you need to feel better. Last week we talked about pop culture that we needed to help us get through 2020. This week, we thought we’d dive further into what pop culture needs to be considered a “pick me up.”
Today, Jordan, Germ, and Patricia will be dissecting what makes a piece of art a pick me up.

2020 is wrapping up in what will go down as one of the most memorable years in a generation. Whatever else can be said about it, 2020 was the year of at home entertainment. With many out of work, and many more stuck at home in partial or complete lockdowns, 2020 finally gave us the time to get through our Netflix queues or played that backlog of video games.
Today, Jordan, Germ, Patricia, and Covert Fade we will be going through our favorites from pop culture that got us through the year. The only rule is that it doesn’t have to be a thing that came out in 2020, just something we experienced for the first time this year.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, so it’s time to gather ‘round while we roast chestnuts on an open fire and stay inside so that Jack Frost can’t nip at our noses. And what better way to ward off the cold than to get a mug of your preferred hot beverage, wrap yourself in a blanket by the heater, and watch Christmas movies!
This week on the podcast, Jordan, Germ, and Patricia dive into three classic Christmas movies for the first time in their lives.

Former JW in the house

Great job y’all. I’m a former JW having toiled away in the ORG from 1976 to 2008. My youth was spent being a JW in the 80s when the ORG hated on Smurfs and video games, tentatively lauded and then scolded Michael Jackson for making Thriller, not being able to tell anyone about the movies we watched like Ghostbusters, Indiana Jones and The Adventure Du Jour so it’s interesting and cathartic hearing your anecdotes from the same time period. I’m interested in hearing more about your personal experiences growing up as a JW and taking apart their various bizarre beliefs and world views. Hearing the experiences of the group have been cathartic and entertaining. Thank you for your work. - Lawrence Hollie formerly of the Waltham/Watertown MA congregation of Jehocah’s Witnesses (I also attended the Cambridge, Milford, Maynard and Lexington congregations at one time or another. It depended on who I was dating or was trying to date)

Finally a family ❤️

I’m so grateful this podcast was created. Being born and raised a fourth generation Witness and leaving the cult 2 years ago it’s amazing to hear people that finally understand me. I only know two other exWitnesses in my area and just listening to this podcast just opens up a whole new world. I can’t say how many times I laughed at how similar everyone’s experience is to mine. It’s great to know that there are exJws out there. Thank you so much!

I’ve really enjoyed these podcasts. The thoughtful critiques and recommendations have given me all kinds of different books and shows to try. Really appreciate it - keep up the good work!
