Batch236: East Brother Beer Company's Rob Lightner

Batch236: East Brother Beer Company's Rob Lightner

Cheers and hella great beers! We're very excited to welcome Rob Lightner, co-founder of East Brother Beer Co. He's here to share East Brother's story, running a brewery in a pandemic, and talk about what separates them from the competition. He also leads us on a tasting of a few of their beers.

In addition to being a co-founder, Rob is also in charge of sales, marketing, and the overall bottom line. He also fancies himself quite the quality control officer!

Greg and Rob start out discussing his background in beer and falling in love with not only craft beer but his neighbor (and fellow co-founder) Chris's homebrew. These early, classic-style beers lead to East Brother Beer Co's heart and what their beer is all about. Paul talks about why they chose the name they did and gives a bit of a geography lesson along the way. We also find out how they found their head brewer, Paul Liszewski.

The discussion turns to the current time and trying to operate a brewery during a pandemic with ever-changing rules, regulations, and hardships. Rob talks about some of the programs they've implemented, from distribution to online beer tastings and everything in between. He also talks about distribution and being forced to ramp up canning and distributing out of state. And they wrap everything up with a round of rapid-fire questions and find out Rob's favorite word for being drunk.

The beers we taste are; Red Lager, Red IPA, and Oatmeal Stout.

A huge thank you to Rob Lightner, Jaime Dooley, and the entire East Brother crew for their time and great beer. If you're in the Bay Area, head over to 1001 Canal Blvd in Richmond, CA. You can visit them online at www.EastBrotherBeer.com and on the social outlets @EastBrotherBeer.

Great Podcast, What I’ve Learned so far...

Greg runs the show and keeps things moving. He talks about his job & traveling around the LA Basin for work once and a while. My guess is he’s driving that Supervisor car for the Bus lines, taking naps and running drivers that have accidents to the clinic for a drug test. Scott is like 80 years old and used to be an Uber driver. There is a little mystery about which Retail establishment he works at now, my guess is the Costco Pharmacy. Dan is a mystery. He reminds me of the 30 y/o stoner that lives in his dads garage, because he’s “independent.”
Allie is the frequent guest, semi permanent girl on the show. I’ve almost DM’d her when I was down in San Diego for a beer meet up, but that just sounds super creepy, so until we’re drinking at the same establishment sometime..... Cheers!

All in all, it’s a well produced podcast. It’s got a nice structure and mixes in current beer & sports news. The bumpers are snappy & the banter keeps you involved. The beer talk isn’t snobby & Dan will frequently say something super ordinary, like “it’s a West Coast IPA, it’s good.” Greg then must interview Dan to figure out what’s “good” about that beer.

Give it a couple listens, you might like what you hear.

Fellow Taphead Loving This Show

Love listening to the gents every week. They’ve introduced me to a ton of great beer and new breweries I would have otherwise never heard of. It doesn’t hurt that they’re pretty funny and entertaining. And I’m a bit of a stickler for audio quality, and these guys deliver on that! I wonder who’s producing their show? Anyway, you should definitely listen to these guys. 🍻
