Batch251: Belching Beaver ¡Viva La Beaver! & Drekker Brewing CHONK Rainbow Sherbert

¡Hola a todos y feliz Cinco de Mayo! In honor of the big fiesta, we've got some Cinco de Mayo fun facts, a Cinco-themed beer review, baseball stadium food, sneaking beer past your spouse, and more! We're also telling stories of being too drunk and trying to "fix" a situation.

Greg kicks off the hidratación with a review of ¡Viva La Beaver! It's Mexican Chocolate and Peanut Butt Milk Stout from Belching Beaver.

Flex gives us some tips for sneaking beers past your spouse, Greg gets out for some Pink Boots research, and we find out the world-famous Dodger Dog is getting a makeover!

We call the bullpen as Flex reviews CHONK Rainbow Sherbert. A fruited sour from Drekker Brewing Company with actual scoops of Rainbow Sherbert.

New Jersey is giving out free beer in hopes of getting people to get the COVID vaccine. A man is arrested after driving into a house and acting like things are cool; this leads to a hilarious discussion of covering things up while drunk. Have you ever done that? And a drunk Tennessee man is accused of throwing poop at cops.

Old-Timey Word of the Week is Foxed. Nothing better than getting all foxed up!

Cheers to Elk Grove, CA, for being our top listening city for last week!

Batch250: Moksa Brewing Berry Chaos, Vennture Brew Co Yous Two & Neck Nosh

Batch250: Moksa Brewing Berry Chaos, Vennture Brew Co Yous Two & Neck Nosh

These pretzels are making me thirsty! Welcome to Batch 250, we're being joined by Erica Humphrey, owner of Neck Nosh pretzel necklaces, and she's sharing some of her delicious snacks and Sacramento beers! We're also talking about Craft Beer Week, "capsizing" from being too hydrated, blacking out and fighting a bouncer, and of course…pretzel fun facts!

Thanks to Erica, she and Greg are drinking Moksa Brewing's Berry Chaos, an Imperial Sour with strawberries, banana, pineapple, and vanilla.

We ask Erica and all of Instagram their thoughts on last week's spicy beer talk and find out what sort of trouble she got into when she was a teenager. Also, did you know police stations will provide you alcohol to test their equipment out?

Flex is drinking Yous Two, a Rye New England IPA from Vennture Brew Co in Milwaukee, WI.

American Craft Beer Week is May 10-16; are you ready to celebrate? Modern Times is launching smaller cans; do you prefer 12oz or 16oz? Natty Light is launching Naturday Frozen Icicles, just in case we haven't suffered enough! A drunk (not from Florida) man wrestles with a bouncer and shatters some windows.

Old-Timey Word of the Week is Capsize. Turns out Greg did some major capsizing; blood was involved.

Cheers to Los Angeles, CA, for being our top listening city for last week!

Batch249: Two Roads Clementine Gose, Tarantula Hill In The Refrigerator & Oliphant Brewing Ant Ray Cow Pants

Batch249: Two Roads Clementine Gose, Tarantula Hill In The Refrigerator & Oliphant Brewing Ant Ray Cow Pants

Cheers and spicy beers! We're excited to be joined by Deb and Flex, because drinking beers with friends is just better! The gang talks about being getting free crappy beer, getting in trouble for drinking underage, baseball and beer, and the need to be drunk before hitting the dance floor.

Flex kicks off the hydration with a review of Ant Ray Cow Pants (that's not a typo). It's a red ale from Oliphant Brewing with ginger, curry, and lime. This leads to a whole discussion on spicy beers and drain-pours. Do you like spicy beer?

Greg heads over to Enegren Brewing for their CJD fundraiser. Deb reminisces about drinking Enegren at Greg's wedding and how hydrated everyone got. Flex, on the other hand, did too much dancing at his wedding.

Firestone Walker, in a shocking move, acquires Cali-Squeeze, SLO Brew's fruited beer brand.

The San Diego Padres' Joe Musgrove threw the team's first no-hitter, and in return, he gets a lifetime supply of beer from Ballast Point. Deb has a fantasy baseball problem, and people are getting mad, but Flex had to give it up cold turkey. This brings up stadium beer prices; California vs. Wisconsin.

Greg is reviewing In The Refrigerator, a hazy double IPA collab from Tarantula Hill and Topa Topa. This beer was made to honor legendary Lakers announcer Chick Hearn.

Do you have a lazy dog? Busch Beer is looking to pay one lucky pooch $20,000 to be their Chief Taste Officer.

Deb is drinking Clementine Gose from Two Roads Brewing Company. This kettle sour was brewed in a tanker truck.

An underaged, drunk, naked guy trashes a hotel room before getting arrested. The crew talks about getting in trouble for drinking underage. Have you ever gotten busted?

Batch248: Poseidon Brewing Company's Brian Oliver & Anthony Stotts

Batch248: Poseidon Brewing Company's Brian Oliver & Anthony Stotts

Cheers to drinking with friends and drinking in person! This week, Greg is at Poseidon Brewing Co. in Ventura, CA. Poseidon has been around since 2013 and is a staple in the Ventura County craft scene. Co-founder and head brewer Brian Oliver, aka Olly, and assistant brewer Anthony Stotts, aka Ant, sit down to talk brewing, surviving a pandemic, and their love for craft beer.

Olly talks about his previous life as an underwater construction diver with the Navy, how he transitioned to brewing, and how he discovered (and couldn't get rid of) assistant brewer Ant. The guys talk about their process for coming up with new beers, some of their more colorful beer names, and what separates them from other local spots. We also find out what beers got the two guys hooked on craft beer in the first place.

The dynamic duo also discusses persevering through a pandemic and multiple shut-downs, how they stay innovative, and how vital canning is. We wrap things up with a round of rapid-fire questions and find out everyone's favorite word for being drunk.

The beers we sampled and reviewed: Ironclad Irish Red, Grapefruit IPA, Rapture of the Deep Raspberry Blonde Ale, and Zambalicious, a west coast hazy IPA.

A huge thanks to Olly and Ant for their time, Vinita for organizing everything, and the entire staff for being so awesome! Find them online at www.poseidonbrewingco.com, @poseidonbrewingco, and visit them in Ventura, CA at 5777 Olivas Park Drive, Unit Q.

Batch247: Evil Twin WHAT EVEN IS BLACK CHERRY ANYWAY? & Frothy Head Raph

Batch247: Evil Twin WHAT EVEN IS BLACK CHERRY ANYWAY? & Frothy Head Raph

Cowabunga tap heads! Our friend Coley is back, and we're getting totally tubular with some anniversary beer from Frothy Beard Brewing, turning IPAs upside down, celebrating national beer day, and buying some awful smelling beer candles.

Coley kicks things off with a review of her very first sour IPA, What Even Is Black Cherry Anyway? from Evil Twin Brewing in New York.

We're celebrating National Beer Day (April 7) with, well, beer! We also talk about the bad news surrounding DMX, our trip to Tarantula Hill for a Laker-themed beer collab, and Wrestlemania (not too much, promise). We also find out that Coley wasn't supposed to watch wrestling but had a massive crush on Chris Jericho. Scott is drinking Stone Brewing's Chrononaut IPA.

Greg gets radical with Raph, a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle-themed beer from Frothy Beard Brewing for the eighth anniversary. Thanks to @brewpugsc for the hookup!

    In Booze News:
•The Great American Beer Festival will be virtual once again in 2021.
•Stone is making waves and releasing a line of hard seltzers.
•The Brewers Association releases their Top 50 Craft Breweries in the US; we have questions.
•Disneyland is adding a second spot in the park to get your booze.
•Scientists say whiskey is good for a cold (can it cure the rona?).
•Miller Lite is selling dive bar scented candles.

Batch246: Humble Sea Beer Science & Evil Twin It Was His Birthday And They Didn’t Even Care

Batch246: Humble Sea Beer Science & Evil Twin It Was His Birthday And They Didn’t Even Care

Grab your lab coats; we're conducting some beer science! We're also talking about people crashing our weddings, learning about some hop profiles, getting silly on Seltzers, and going to Florida for free beer.

Ally kicks off our hydration with a review of Evil Twin Brewing's It Was His Birthday and They Didn't Even Care. A blue, sour IPA with flavors of melted cotton candy, birthday cake sugar floss, candied raspberries, and ice cream-soaked waffle cones.

A Florida couple offers free beer as a way to meet their neighbors. This leads to a discussion on free beer at parties, wedding crashers (in real life, not the movie), and trying to hook Dan up at Greg's wedding.

Busch Beer is giving away a free wedding to three couples, but free beer isn't included. This brings up the idea of renewing wedding vows and the idea that marriages should be structured like sports contracts, a seven-year deal with player options.

The United States Department of Justice dismisses any concerns over CBA's sale of Kona Hawaii to PV Brewing.

Greg is conducting Beer Science with two single hop beers from Humble Sea Brewing: Boatloads of Nelson and Boatloads of Riwaka.

Lookout San Francisco, Ballast Point is closing up shop in Chicago and moving to the bay area. This brings up an important question: are they craft (again)?

St. Patrick's Day beer sales aren't as bad as they could have been.

Anheuser-Busch and Patagonia settle their trademark case over Patagonia Brewing.

Karl Strauss is shipping their hard seltzer outside of California.

Cheers to Moorpark, CA, for being our top listening city for last week!

Great Podcast, What I’ve Learned so far...

Greg runs the show and keeps things moving. He talks about his job & traveling around the LA Basin for work once and a while. My guess is he’s driving that Supervisor car for the Bus lines, taking naps and running drivers that have accidents to the clinic for a drug test. Scott is like 80 years old and used to be an Uber driver. There is a little mystery about which Retail establishment he works at now, my guess is the Costco Pharmacy. Dan is a mystery. He reminds me of the 30 y/o stoner that lives in his dads garage, because he’s “independent.”
Allie is the frequent guest, semi permanent girl on the show. I’ve almost DM’d her when I was down in San Diego for a beer meet up, but that just sounds super creepy, so until we’re drinking at the same establishment sometime..... Cheers!

All in all, it’s a well produced podcast. It’s got a nice structure and mixes in current beer & sports news. The bumpers are snappy & the banter keeps you involved. The beer talk isn’t snobby & Dan will frequently say something super ordinary, like “it’s a West Coast IPA, it’s good.” Greg then must interview Dan to figure out what’s “good” about that beer.

Give it a couple listens, you might like what you hear.

Fellow Taphead Loving This Show

Love listening to the gents every week. They’ve introduced me to a ton of great beer and new breweries I would have otherwise never heard of. It doesn’t hurt that they’re pretty funny and entertaining. And I’m a bit of a stickler for audio quality, and these guys deliver on that! I wonder who’s producing their show? Anyway, you should definitely listen to these guys. 🍻
