The Generous Life - Travis Garner

People throughout the centuries have been talking about the topic of generosity as a means to achieve the good life. St. Francis of Assisi once said, "For it is in giving that we receive." Winston Churchill once said, "We make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we give." In the New Testament, in the book of Acts chapter 20, the Apostle Paul quotes Jesus himself in saying, "It is more blessed to give than to receive."

A couple years ago, Jenni Santi wrote a book entitled The Giving Way to Happiness: The Science Behind the Life-Changing Power of Giving, and in the book she writes, "Scientific research provides compelling data to support the anecdotal evidence that giving is a powerful pathway to personal growth and lasting happiness. Experiments show evidence that altruism is hardwired in the brain—and it’s pleasurable. Helping others may just be the secret to living a life that is not only happier but also healthier, wealthier, more productive, and meaningful.

No one can deny that we’ve been in a time that feels like darkness. Natural disasters, ongoing pandemic, fighting and division. Even the days themselves are shorter and darker. But for two thousand years, Christmas is and has been a season of light in the darkness. Jesus himself said, “I am the light of the world!” No matter how dark it gets, the story of Christmas is that there is always a light on the way. Jesus told his followers, “You are the light of the world,” and this Christmas season is an opportunity like no other for us to shine the light of Jesus to the world around us.
