    What God is doing—not only around you, but in you

    Daniels vision appalled him. As a result, he was overcome and lay sick for some days. He was foretold about the rise of murderous empires who would wreak havoc on the earth and his people. God would put it to an end, but not after considerable pain and desecration. How could Daniel possibly endure? This sermon explores Daniel 8, his second vision. These are big topics. They include symbolism and multiple layers of meaning. At the same time, how Daniel navigates these hardships, and how he cultivates his faith and character throughout, help us journey though our own lives and hardships today, especially as the chaos of the world looms and threatens. John Eldredge says: The war for the human heart is the epicentre of the war in the world. Lets look at the war Daniel won in his heart, and the war we can also win as well.

    Jesus compared his return to labour pains. Having a baby is at the same time exciting and scary, painful and joyful, dangerous and life-changing. So it will be when he returns. There will be increasing trouble, but also something beautiful and breath-taking at the end. After his capture and servitude in a foreign court for most of his life, Daniel began to have visions about the end of days. Four terrifying beasts emerged from the sea, each fearsome in its own right. The last was particularly troublesome. Daniel was distressed. And yet, seated on his throne, the Ancient of Days cast down judgment. Delay does not mean defeat. God cannot loseand neither can his people. This sermon explores the first of Daniels four visions (Daniel 7), provides historical context to what he saw, and speaks to how this impacts us todaybecause it does. Yes, our world is going into labour.

    Its one of the Bibles most famous stories alongside Noah and the Ark, David and Goliath. and Jesus turning water into wineDaniel in the Lions Den. But when we are so familiar with a story, we risk not hearing it at all. Since we think we already know what its about, we fail to study it more deeply, and possibly miss out on what God may be saying to us today. Daniel was in his 80s. He had served in a foreign court for nearly 70 years. He had lost so much. Rivals tricked the king into administering what was most likely a loyalty oath to the new superpower. No one could pray to any man or god except Darius. However, Daniel refused to change. As a result, he was thrown into a den of lions (literally a pit). This sermon is an invitation to explore Daniel and the Lions Den as if for the first time. It unpacks Daniel 6, the brutality of the ancient world, and uncovers what actually happened and why. True bravery is kneeling before God while facing the lions, both then and now.
