State of the SEC, Will Dabo ever leave for Bama?

State of the SEC, Will Dabo ever leave for Bama?

Dan Wetzel, Pete Thamel and SI’s Pat Forde hope you guys had an amazing 4th of July weekend. We are still away on vacation, but the guys made sure to pre-tape this SEC preview for your listening pleasure.

We begin with the yearly circus otherwise known as SEC Media Days after the conference delayed this year's virtual meeting. What does it mean for the season?

Alabama took a relative step back last season. Will the Tide take the title? Or will Florida or Georgia step up from the East? And will A&M and Jimbo Fisher finally contend for the conference championship? We also rank the SEC coaches and pick the over/under win totals for each team.

Fantasy conference realignment, State of the Big 10

On the 10th anniversary of the last gigantic shift in conference realignment, SI’s Pat Forde sets out to break up the Power 5 for good and properly slot teams into more geographic conferences. Pat, alongside Dan Wetzel and Pete Thamel, take you through this wild (and unlikely) scenario.

The guys then take a deep look at the landscape across the Big 10, picking each team's over/under win totals. What's the overall health of the conference? Will Ohio State take home the title again or is this the year Penn State finally gets over the hump? Will Minnesota continue their winning ways and how does Nebraska get back to theirs? (18:32)

Coach K speaks, Emoni Bates commits, Big 12 State of the Conference

Coach K speaks, Emoni Bates commits, Big 12 State of the Conference

Collegiate sports have been tied to the Black Lives Matter movement since the death of George Floyd, and this week was no different. Duke basketball head coach Mike Krzyzewski finally issued a powerful statement. Mississippi, after pressure from players and leagues alike, took down their state flag. Dan Wetzel, Pete Thamel and SI’s Pat Forde react to the latest instances of the college game making a difference.

The top basketball recruit in the 2022 cycle, Emoni Bates, committed to Michigan State on Monday. What’s his impact on the Spartans and the game overall?

The guys also dive into the current state of the Big 12 as football season fast approaches. Will OU run away with the league or will their rivals Texas and Oklahoma State give them a run for the title?

Under Armour backed out of their record-breaking deal with UCLA. What's next for the Bruins and is this a sign of things to come from apparel companies?

Finally, on another edition of podcast people’s court, Judges Thamel, Wetzel, and Forde preside over a case from Louisiana where a man jumped into the fishing tank at his local Bass Pro Shop…

Football in the spring, UL vs UK online battle, Loch Ness monster conspiracy

Football in the spring, UL vs UK online battle, Loch Ness monster conspiracy

Dan Wetzel, Pete Thamel and SI’s Pat Forde continue their march through the longest offseason of all-time…and why it could be getting longer. The Athletic reported this week that three major conferences are considering moving championship games back a weekend so teams can play makeup games. At this point, why aren’t administrators talking more about moving the season to the spring? (00:38)

Pete wrote a great piece this week diving into the Oklahoma State story explaining why the players' reaction involved more than just an OAN shirt. Did Chuba Hubbard save Mike Gundy’s career? (17:44)

We also had a classic social media battle over the past few days between the Louisville Cardinals and Kentucky Wildcats…except it wasn’t your average fan getting the fight started. Why did John Calipari’s daughter go after Chris Mack’s wife? And where does this rank among the all-time great Card vs. Cat feuds? (27:00)

And, as if 2020 couldn’t get any crazier, the Loch Ness monster has burst onto the scene after one tourist published pictures of what looks like a giant fish swimming in the famed lake… but the guys are a bit skeptical. And halfway across the world, sex-crazed monkeys have taken control of a Thai city. Is this beginning of the animal revolt we have been warning listeners about for years? (40:24)

SEC presses Mississippi, Bill Self threatens NCAA, Wisconsin Strip Clubs & COVID-19

Dan Wetzel returns after a week of vacation to lead Pete Thamel and SI’s Pat Forde down a rabbit hole of topics…the guys begin with the growing concern for the football season in the fall. As numbers continue to rise both inside and outside of locker rooms, do we have any hope left for a season? (3:30)

The NCAA and the SEC both released statements last week asking the state of Mississippi to remove the confederate battle flag from their state flag. Will they actually make an impact? (25:29)

On the hardwood last week, OSU star Cade Cunningham decided to stick it out in Stillwater while Bill Self threatened the NCAA with a lawsuit. Does Self have a case? (33:45)

Dan also compiled a list of wacky stories over his holiday that includes one Wisconsin strip club, two all-time bowl sponsors and three warring tuna empires. (43:54)

Chicken Wars and Beer- The content America needs

Found this podcast over a year ago and have been a devoted listener ever since. It’s time to do my civic duty and give you all a five-star review. Always was a big fan of Pat and remain so despite his beer elitism. There’s no way you drink IPA’s while bass fishing, Pat. Thamel is incredibly knowledgeable on assistant coaches and second team players which I appreciate more than Dan probably does. However, Pete never getting sent to SEC Media Days by NYT was the least surprising thing ever- well maybe next to him bragging about it. Wetzel makes the podcast. No man has finger on the pulse on bizarre coach behavior, odd crimes, animal attacks, and the chicken wars like Dan Wetzel. It actually makes up for all the digressions away from college football. I cannot wait for the coverage of Kiffin and Leach this fall. I appreciate you guys not dwelling on COVID-19 the whole time and instead focusing on entertaining the country. Keep up the great work and cheers!

Everything I Need from a College Sports Podcast and More

I love College Football. I have since I was kid. I’ve been consuming podcasts since I was a teenager. I have listened to probably thousands of hours of sports talk radio in my life. And I feel like my team scores a touchdown every time I see I have a new Yahoo Sports College Podcast in my queue.

These guys get it: College is a fun time, and even though I’m pretty sure these guys haven’t attended any institution of higher learning in about 25 years, they make it so fun. Not like those boring people at ESPN. Maybe if those Gameday Guys talked more about craft beer and the “Chicken Wars” and animals uprisings, they too could get a 5 Star rating... but instead they interview Kirby Smart for the 100th time. YAWN.

Even on serious topics like the current pandemic and social injustices, the have a way of discussing it openly and honestly and how it ties into the larger scope and how these problems our society is encountering affect not just sports, but our way of life..

All have been in sports journalism for some time; written books, been in documentaries, and know the inner machinations of College Athletics better than most.

And they’re hilarious. Do yourself a favor and subscribe to this podcast. You won’t regret it. Hell, if you meet them in a college town while they’re covering a game, they might even grab a beer with ya.

Yeehaw
