From a postmodern perspective, there is no entirely objective “view from nowhere.” The Evangelical tradition, however, presents itself as ahistorical and objective. Trans ordained priest Shannon Kearns reminds us that actively working to understand the history that has shaped current theological perspectives can help us see in what ways it has influenced how we live, vote, and interact with those unlike us. He does so in part by telling his own story and arguing that contextual theologies (trans, liberation, black, feminist, etc.) offer a way to nuance and develop our faith today. Engaging with new theologies may surprise us (we might not agree with Peter and Paul after all!) but may also lead us through a beautiful and worthy struggle.
