    Practicing African Traditional Religions

    Practicing African Traditional Religions

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.
In Session 210, we talked with Dr. Dianne Stewart about the principles and themes that underlie many African traditional religions and we promised you a part 2 of that conversation to learn more about the practice of these religions. To help us dig into this topic, today I’m excited that we’re joined by Ehime Ora. Ehime and I chatted about her personal journey to being an Ifa and Orisha priestess, where to start if you’re a beginner in these practices, how technology and social media have made it easier to teach others about these traditions, and how practicing African traditional religions can work in tandem with Christianity, Islam, and other faith practices.

    Black Women & Serial Violence

    Black Women & Serial Violence

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.
The true crime genre is one of the fastest growing, but it is incredibly telling who’s stories are told. This has become yet another space where the stories of Black women who are victims are largely ignored, particularly those of darker skinned Black women. This erasure perpetuates the myth that Black women are not targets of serial violence, leaving cases unsolved and communities shattered. To share about the important work she’s done to shed light on Black women victims of serial violence, today we’re joined by Dr. Terrion Williamson. Dr. Williamson and I chatted about how she began to research in this area, why Black women, particularly sex workers, are often targets for serial murder, the inequalities with which Black women victims are covered in the media, and the impact that these crimes have on communities.

Join us for "The Skin I'm In"

Join us for "The Skin I'm In"

Each July, we celebrate Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. This year, the theme we’ve chosen is The Skin I’m In.
So often as Black women we’re told it’s okay to be ourselves as long as it doesn’t make others uncomfortable. We’re told to embrace our individuality but in the ways that align neatly with the expression of individuality that’s digestible for society. But what happens when you don’t feel like you fit into the mold? We’re not always shown how to manage the othering and the stigma that comes with it. Well this month, we’re doing exactly that and expanding what it means to show up as a Black woman and sharing words of encouragement to any sisters struggling to accept what feels natural to them.
All month long you can expect content on our blog, here on the podcast, in our Sister Circle community, and across our social media channels to celebrate being authentic to you. We’ll be engaging the ways history has impacted the way we love and value ourselves and tapping into the ways we can combat negative self-image. So be sure to visit us at therapyforblackgirls.com to stay connected and follow us on both IG & FB @therapyforblackgirls or on Twitter at @therapy4bgirls
And if you want to get the inside scoop and reminders about events and conversations for the month, you can text the word 'July' to 504-499-0663.

Recently we've gotten a few questions in the mailbox about how to find the best therapist for you and your needs, so this week I'm offering some things to consider in terms of whether your therapist needs to be Black, questions to ask during your consultation, and getting referrals from friends, family, or colleagues.

    In The Circle w/ Deleesa

    In The Circle w/ Deleesa

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.
Y’all know that I am a huge reality tv fan and one of my favorite newer shows is "The Circle" on Netflix. Season 2 of the show wrapped in May 2021 and there were lots of twists and turns that required the contestants to think quickly on their feet and stay on top of their strategies. As the season progressed, I was paying close attention to the Black women in the game and the choices they were making and how other players were responding to them, and thinking a lot about what kind of strategy I might employ if I were to be on a show like this. Needless to say I had lots of questions and who better to help us answer some of these questions than Season 2 winner, Deleesa St Agathe. Deleesa and I chatted about why she chose to go into the game as her husband Trevor, how she prepared for the game, her thoughts about the perception of Black women on reality tv, how she kept herself busy in isolation, and the surprise of finding out she was expecting while filming.
