Three Things from Edmonton - Episode 52: cemeteries, trains, infrastructure Three Things from Edmonton

    • Mental Health

Hello, thanks for spending some time with the Three Things podcast, Happy New Year!

This new episode, the first of 2022, drops into a time that does not feel very new. The pandemic is still with us. Uncertainty of all kinds still plague us. Democracy still feels under attack. And so on. Why add into the mix three puny things that make me happy or grateful?

Good question.

I was unexpectedly asked a version of it today in a medical centre waiting room (more details in the pod about why I was there) by a fellow sufferer. "You seem jolly and pleasant, how do you stay that way?" he said. I didn’t see that coming. I thought about it for a second. I came up with three things. I eat healthy food (thank you Auntie Shelagh), I sleep not great but okay, and I try to notice the things that make me happy and grateful. He was then called in for his MRI. I won’t see him again. I will see him always.

So, why add into the mix three puny things that make me happy and grateful? Because they help me give an account of myself? Because they’re not puny? Because we need words more than ever?

This week’s three things:

Cemeteries
Trains, and Chekhov
Infrastructure (aka my neck), Arendt, Dylan

The music in the podcast is original, from the original composer and pianist Brendan McGrath. Each week I am grateful he replied to my text. The end bells were recorded live by Edmonton metal artist Slavo Cech. I am grateful the cleavages of international politics deposited Slavo in north Edmonton, where we met in high school.

I am at glenn.kubish@gmail.com

I’ll add the transcript/blog post as soon as I can.
