    What You Need To Know About Monetizing Your Platform and Niching Down

    There is a really important intersection between virality and the way the algorithm works that I think a lot of content creators, when they first start creating content don’t fully understand. Now, I’ve been reading a book by YouTube expert Derral Eves called The YouTube Formula

    I highly recommend it, it’s really good. I heard Darral speak last year at Funnel Hacking Live, and I learned some really important things about the psychology of why people buy and how to monetize your platform. And in the book, he mentions a concept that blew my mind. And if you are a business owner who is trying to use TikTok to reach a broader audience and generate sales, then this is going to be a really valuable framework to understand. So in the book, Derral talks about your two avatars. You have your audience avatar who will love consuming your content, and you have your customer avatar who will potentially purchase from you. And the key to growing your business with TikTok is to think of your customer avatar as a subset of your audience avatar. A lot of business owners, when they get started with publishing on TikTok,

    They want to just start talking to their audience as if they are warm traffic.

    Now obviously this makes sense because publishing content takes a lot of work, right?

    And so if you are going to publish content to a platform, ideally you want it to lead to customers and sales. The problem is that platforms like TikTok do NOT care about growing your business.

    They want to keep people on their platform as long as possible so that they can serve more ads and be profitable. That is their whole business model, right? And so when you get started on TikTok or any platform for that matter, you want to create content specifically for your audience avatar, content that has broader appeal. Because, if you focus on creating content for your audience avatar and create content that has broader appeal, then you are aligning with the platform’s goals of keeping people engaged and on the platform.  And so you are allowing TikTok to scale your customer base for you. So if you are a business owner, it is extremely important to create content that has a broader appeal than just your customer avatar. And then once you establish yourself on the platform and gain an audience, then you can talk to the subset of your audience that is your potential customers. Now, you hear a lot of talk on TikTok these days about how ‘you are the niche’ and ‘become the niche’ and to get rid of this idea of niching down and make your platform more about you. And this idea has merit in the sense that you want to create content that has broader appeal. But if you are a business owner, don’t throw the concept of having a niche out the window. It’s all about branding. Branding is about making it easy for people to understand what value you provide in the marketplace. And so while it’s important to create content that has broader appeal, it's also extremely important to brand yourself in a way that your potential customers understand what value and transformation you provide and who you provide it to, and that means understanding what niche you are in.

Using keywords when creating your username and handle is something that you absolutely should do. TikTok is still a blue ocean in terms of keyword traffic. And if you use the right keywords that your ideal customers are searching for, you can rank in organic search on the app. The mistake that a lot of people make is that they want to make their username or their handle the name of their brand. And there’s nothing wrong with that, but you might as well create your account with the intention of showing up organically for your desired keyword. So when you are creating your TikTok account, consider structuring it in a way that is going to give you maximum organic reach.     In this episode, we’re going to talk about why Tiktok is not only an amazing platform for the organic reach that you can get right now, but why, from a long-term perspective, getting started on TikTok is also going to help you with all of your future online marketing efforts moving forward. The reason that I say this is because I believe that short-form video is the future of online marketing, and in this episode we are going to talk about why. Stay tuned and let’s get into it! Now I was reading an article on kairosmedia.com from September 2021 that said that TikTok had overtaken YouTube in total watch time in the US and the UK. And it also said that the data suggested that TikTok users in the US are now watching 24 hours of content per month, in comparison to 22 hours and 40 minutes on YouTube. So apparently people like watching short-form video. Additionally, many other platforms are copying TikTok and have recently been jumping into the short-form video trend. So you have YouTube coming out with #Shorts. You have Instagram upping the ante with Reels. You also have other platforms that are putting more of an emphasis on video content, such as Pinterest. And so why is this happening? What is going on with this trend? And how can we take a look at what is going on now, to know how to get ahead of the trends moving forward? Why is short-from video getting so big? Well, a lot of people might say that short-form video Is becoming more popular because of our shorter and shorter attention spans, and we all know that there is some truth to that, but that’s not the main reason but that’s not what I want to talk about in this episode; I want to talk about the long-term ramifications of TikTok on the fabric of the internet world and how we communicate. The main reason that short form video is the future of online marketing is because with more and more people creating more and more content online, there simply has to be a mechanism that allows a shorter cycle of evaluation to determine what content you want to pay attention to.
    Let me give you an example of what I mean by this. If you are like me you watch YouTube to learn about new information and skills. I actually spend a lot of time watching YouTube I love YouTube. And one of the things I watch are tutorial videos, for example, about how to do graphic design and use different softwares. And if I want to learn something specific about Photoshop, like let’s say how to create a clipping mask for example, then typically what I will do is I will find a video tutorial on the topic, but I won’t start at the beginning and watch the whole video. Usually what I’ll do is skip right to the middle and kind of backtrack to find the point where they give the solution. Because we all know there is the intro, and the buildup, and the subscribe request and it’s like get to the point, right? On the other hand, you can find in-depth tutorials on TikTok that will give you all the information on a topic within 20-30 seconds. And so basically, what TikTok is doing, long-term, is raising the bar on the quality of video content across the internet, generally. Because here’s the thing. If you are consuming content, and you value your time - then you will be cognizant of the investment of your attention versus the payoff when you are consuming content. So from that perspective, short form video is inevitably the next big thing in the online world. A greater volume of content necessarily means that there will be a demand for better information, delivered more succinctly, with higher entertainment value.     The statistics are absolutely bonkers.There was an article that I read recently that said, according to Cloudflare, TikTok surpassed Google in total traffic in 2021.


    So just think about that for a second.


    Tiktok, this brand new app that came out in 2017, 2018 surpassed Google in the amount of total traffic on the platform in 2021.


    Many people think of Google as the front page of the internet. And it still is, definitely.

    Hey there, this is Cheryl Spencer and first of all, I just want to say welcome to this brand new podcast - this is my first podcast episode ever! And I’m so excited to be publishing a podcast - because I LOVE listening to podcasts and so it’s something that I’ve been wanting to do for a while But the reason for finally starting this podcast is because I have been publishing on TikTok, and also helping people grow their TikTok accounts. I have to say there are some very exciting opportunities and insights that I want to share with you, especially if you are a business owner. So the point of this podcast is to share insights about the massive targeted traffic opportunity that TikTok offers IF you are a business Owner - meaning that you already have a product or a service that you sell, and are just looking to get more of your ideal customers in the door. The NUMBER ONE question that I get asked by business owners is: Why should I get started on TikTok? What is the point? Isn’t TikTok just full of a bunch of teenagers doing crazy dances and twerking? And how would that even benefit my business at all? And the answer to the question “should I get my business on TikTok” is a RESOUNDING YES - IF you are a business owner AND you like free highly-targeted traffic – then TikTok offers a massive opportunity for you! If you don’t like free highly targeted traffic then this podcast is probably not for you. But don’t take my word for it - In a moment, I want to share with you a quote from Gary V that perfectly explains why you should be on the platform. Actually, the reason why I got started on TikTok about 9 months ago, was because I heard Gary V talking about the massive traffic potential on TikTok. And I just kept hearing about it everywhere and seeing other people have massive success publishing there and growing businesses there. And at the time I was publishing on YouTube. And my channel was growing really slowly, and so I decided to go ahead and try out TikTok. And I was able to get to 10k followers in about 30 days which is not even that outlandish for TikTok, which is crazy if you really think about it. And I was able to experience the huge potential that TikTok offer in generating targeted traffic and leads Ok so I want to share with you the quote from Gary V - This was on one of his podcast recently, he said, (and I’m paraphrasing a bit but here is the quote): “You can start building brand on TikTok, believe it or not...and there's a huge white space for every business on TikTok....Organic reach is through the moon; 30 and 40-year-olds are on the platform at scale….Everyone here is grossly underestimating how much they can do on TikTok because TikTok is now Instagram from 7 years ago, but you're going to wait another 3 years before you treat it that way.” That was from ‘The Gary V Audio Experience’ from February 17th, 2022, if you want to go check out the rest of the episode. Basically, that gives you a ton of valuable insight right there. TikTok is still a blue ocean opportunity IF you know how to properly leverage it.
