Cody Berman - The Financial Independence Show (podcast) (November 2023)

Co-hosted by Cody Berman and Justin Taylor, The Financial Independence Show is a podcast that tells the stories of people who've reached financial independence. As they put it on their website, they "cover topics like building wealth, entrepreneurship, investing, money mindset, small business, frugality, geoarbitrage, side hustles, real estate, productivity, travel, and so much more."

Time in The Market is typically about profiling people who do stock market due diligence, but Preston and I met Cody at FinCon 2023 in New Orleans. After we saw his enthusiasm and heard about his impressive FI journey, we knew we had get an interview with him before he becomes the next superstar financial influcer.

Trung - DTF Capital / Sleep Well Investments (substack) (October 2023)

Trung - DTF Capital / Sleep Well Investments (substack) (October 2023)

Trung is the author of Sleep Well Investments, a substack newsletter about time-tested businesses with the ingredients to become or remain market leaders. His investing style is long-term focused and filled with purpose as he documents his investing decisions for his 4-year-old daughter's portfolio, which she will take over in 2037 upon turning 18.

    A bit more about Trung:

I started writing on Seeking Alpha about 7 years ago and on private blogs before that, mostly to hear investors' opinions about my investment process. I was a bad investor, blindly picking stock initially and going into deep value investing because it seemed all businesses were investable if the price was right. I even co-hosted a value investing meetup in London for several years pre-covid. And I thought I had investing figured out, but now I know it was because the timing was right; we were in the middle of a strong bull market between 2013-2019. Then growth stocks came to the fore, and I got sucked in the FOMO; soon later, I went through the post-mortem analysis of my mistakes. I started Sleep Well Investing because I wanted to start fresh. I wanted to form an investing style that lasts. So, I refined my framework to address all the mistakes I have made from value to growth investing and that the stock I pick should bring me joy whenever I read about the business—this time, I want to own the business, not just buy the shares. You can see that most of my picks so far have been about businesses that serve people when they are in nature and doing things by hand. For example, Shimano and MIPS are in the bike component market, and FND and NVR are in the DIY and homebuilding segment. Also, this time, I wanted to do it with a purpose, which is to invest in my children's future and invest in businesses that would add value to their future. In combination, the marriage of joy, purpose, and elimination of mistakes in my value and growth stock days have led me to Sleep Well Investments. I hope to last as long as the businesses I write about and own.
