This conference explores cultural and artistic interactions between Jews and Christians in the medieval era, with presentations on medieval metalwork, architecture, and sculpture. Concealed within the foundation of a 12th-century home in the former Jewish quarter of Erfurt, Germany, a hoard of medieval coins and gold and silver jewelry was discovered a decade ago. This treasure, which lay buried for over 600 years, was hidden there by a Jewish merchant just before the vicious massacre of Erfurt’s Jews in 1349, during the time of the Black Death.
